France World Cup winner Raphael Varane announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. Despite stepping away from the pitch, he will continue with Como in a non-playing capacity. Varane joined the Italian club this season but was excluded from their Serie A squad after suffering a knee injury in August.

On social media, Varane stated, “A new life begins off the pitch… I will remain with Como, just without using my boots and shin pads.” The four-time Champions League winner hinted at future plans in his new role.

Varane began his career at French club Lens before joining Real Madrid at 18 in 2011. He quickly established himself, winning his first La Liga title in his debut season and securing his first Champions League crown in 2014, adding three more in subsequent years.

In 2024, Varane moved to Manchester United, winning the League Cup and FA Cup. Last season, he left Old Trafford for Como, where he played just one Coppa Italia match before sustaining his knee injury.

Reflecting on his career, Varane said, “From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team, I have defended every badge with everything I have and loved every minute of the journey.”

Varane earned 93 caps for France, with the highlight of his international career being the 2018 World Cup victory.
