Dr. Salawu Abiola, a psychiatrist and President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, has advised Nigerians to prioritize adequate sleep and rest to reduce the risk of mental health issues, especially in the face of current economic challenges.

In an interview, Dr. Abiola warned that prolonged sleeplessness could signal an underlying mental health problem that needs attention. He described poor sleep as a potential gateway to mental illness and identified conditions such as depression, stress, anxiety disorders, and loss of interest as triggers of mental health problems.

The psychiatrist pointed to the increasing cases of depression in Nigeria, attributing it to the nation’s current economic hardship. He stressed the importance of engaging in positive activities that bring happiness and managing emotions to prevent falling into depression.

Additionally, Dr. Abiola highlighted the impact of prolonged stress on the immune system and its connection to both mental and physical health. He noted that accumulated stress has led to sudden deaths and urged people to set realistic goals, practice time management, and take regular breaks to cope with stress.

He emphasized the significance of rest, stating, “If you work and die today, someone will replace you at the workplace, but no one replaces you in the family.” Dr. Abiola encouraged Nigerians to balance work with adequate rest, noting that even during working hours, a short break can help prevent burnout.
