The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has named Professor Babatunde Bolaji Bernard, Senior Special Assistant to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, as Africa’s first Professor of Radioecology. This achievement highlights his dedication to nuclear science and environmental safety.
After earning a BSc in Zoology and MSc in Ecology and Environmental Biology from the University of Ibadan, Babatunde received his PhD through a Split-Side Commonwealth Scholarship. He led the establishment of Africa’s first radioecology lab and trained over 80 African scientists. His groundbreaking research includes pollution monitoring, radiochemistry, and marine risk assessment.
Babatunde is celebrated globally for his contributions to environmental safety, climate change research, and nuclear pollution control.
