The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation has allocated ₦1 billion to support victims of the recent flood disaster in Borno.
Alhaji Sani Lugga, a committee member, announced this in a statement issued in Katsina on Monday. He explained that the committee convened an emergency meeting via Zoom on September 11, 2024, due to the severe flood crisis in Maiduguri, where they approved the funds for immediate relief efforts through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Established by former President Goodluck Jonathan on October 9, 2012, the 34-member committee includes prominent figures such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba as Co-Chairmen, along with members like Alhaji Mohamed Indimi, Dr. Mike Adenuga, Hajiya Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman, and others, with Hajiya Hajara Modu serving as Secretary.
Lugga noted that the committee was retained by both former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Tinubu, continuing its annual assistance to flood victims in Nigeria.
He also clarified some media misconceptions regarding a ₦2 billion donation mentioned by Dangote during his visit to Borno. Of this amount, ₦1 billion is designated for the committee’s relief efforts, while the remaining ₦1 billion was donated by the Dangote Foundation.
“We pray to Allah to touch the hearts of all the people and organizations to assist the victims of the Borno flood and all other natural disasters,” Lugga added.
