President Bola Tinubu has established a national disaster relief fund to tackle the growing impact of floods and other natural disasters in Nigeria. The announcement was made during his visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, where he expressed solidarity with victims affected by recent flooding from Alau Dam.
During his visit to the Government House in Borno, Tinubu highlighted the urgent need for the fund due to climate change and unpredictable weather patterns. He proposed involving the private sector in rebuilding affected areas and suggested allocating part of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds to support the initiative.
Accompanied by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu emphasized the National Assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the executive on the fund’s establishment. He also visited the Shehu of Borno and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, reflecting on the severe impact of climate-related disasters.
Tinubu extended his sympathy to Borno, Yobe, and other flood-affected states, reassuring citizens of a comprehensive recovery program. He praised Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum for his swift response and commended the Nigerian military for their efforts in evacuating flood victims.
The newly launched disaster relief fund aims to enhance Nigeria’s preparedness and response to natural disasters, fostering national unity and resilience.
