In a recent address at the Empower-Her-Nigeria program on October 15, 2024, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Nigerian women have access to justice and are protected against all forms of discrimination and violence. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, he emphasized the importance of implementing gender-sensitive policies to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in the country.

President Tinubu acknowledged the numerous challenges women face, including limited access to education and healthcare, gender-based violence, and economic disparities. He stressed that addressing these issues is crucial for national development and for creating opportunities where women can thrive and succeed.

“We must ensure women have access to justice, and protection from all forms of violence and discrimination, which requires strengthening our institutions, promoting gender-sensitive policies, and supporting women’s rural organizations,” he stated.

Additionally, Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), highlighted the bank’s commitment to empowering women, revealing that over 78% of UBA’s working capital loans are directed towards women-led and women-owned enterprises. This initiative reflects a broader effort to recognize and support the critical roles women play in society.

The program aims to foster women’s empowerment across various sectors, including farming, health, and entertainment, reinforcing the government’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment for women in Nigeria.
