The Presidency has compared Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to former US President Donald Trump. Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, drew the parallel in a social media post on X on Wednesday.
Ajayi likened Obi to Trump, suggesting that both use provocative rhetoric to rally their supporters and criticize the countries they aim to lead. He stated, “Peter Obi is the Nigerian version of Donald Trump. Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again just to make a point and rile up his base.”
This comparison follows a recent US presidential debate between Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, where both candidates clashed on various issues. Ajayi noted that Harris effectively challenged Trump during the debate, stating, “Kamala Harris prosecuted Trump very well in their first face-to-face debate. Kamala convincingly won the debate and left no one in doubt about his capacity.”
Ajayi added that while Harris was reported to have made just one incorrect claim, Trump made 33 false claims during the same debate. Media reports indicated that Trump often responded to Harris’s provocations with conspiracy theories and false statements, including an unfounded claim about immigrants consuming pets.
The 2024 US elections are scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
