The Premier League has scheduled a long-anticipated hearing into Manchester City, set to commence on Monday. The club faces allegations of breaching financial fair play (FFP) regulations by failing to provide adequate financial records.
Allegations and Charges
Manchester City, under the management of Pep Guardiola, is accused of violating FFP rules across nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018. The Premier League alleges over 100 breaches, including discrepancies between the publicly reported remuneration for a coach and the actual amounts paid.
During the period in question, Manchester City won three Premier League titles (2012, 2014, and 2018). The club is expected to mount a defense against these charges, with the full proceedings likely to extend over two months.
Club’s Response
In response to the charges, Manchester City issued a statement last year rejecting the allegations:
“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.
“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.
“As such, we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
