Plateau State Local Government Elections: Mixed Reactions to Conduct and Results

2 mn read

On October 9th, 2024, Plateau State conducted elections across its 17 local government areas, electing Chairmen and Councillors tasked with governing at the grassroots level. The elections have sparked divided opinions regarding their conduct and results.

Since the conclusion of the elections and the swearing-in of the winners, reactions have varied widely. While some critics point to observed lapses during the process, many citizens have commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) for a more transparent and fair election compared to previous years. Supporters argue that Plateau State residents have not experienced such a positive electoral process in a long time.

This election was particularly significant, as the previous local government elections in 2021, held under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of former Governor Simon Lalong, were marred by controversy. During those elections, results were announced while the process was still ongoing, with the APC winning all 17 Chairmanship and 325 Councillorship seats.

In contrast, the recent elections demonstrated the competitiveness of the political landscape in Plateau State. Results released by PLASIEC indicate that the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured all 17 Chairmanship positions and 285 Councillorship seats. The APC, while still a significant force, managed to win only 14 Councillorship seats. Other parties also made their mark, with the Young Progressives Party (YPP) winning four seats, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) securing one, and a rerun scheduled in 21 Wards yet to be determined.

The APC has publicly rejected the results, with Party Chairman Rufus Bature criticizing PLASIEC’s handling of the elections. He expressed intentions to challenge the outcome in court, asserting that the PDP had missed an opportunity to prove its popularity ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.

Despite the APC’s objections, citizens like John Iliya have expressed appreciation for the electoral process, specifically praising Governor Mutfwang for allowing PLASIEC to operate independently without interference. This sentiment reflects a hope for continued democratic integrity and engagement in Plateau State’s political landscape.
