The Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have nullified the recent suspensions and counter-suspensions that arose from internal disputes within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). The announcement was made by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the Governor of Bauchi State, following a two-day meeting aimed at resolving the party’s internal conflicts.
Background of the Dispute
The turmoil within the PDP began when the NWC, led by Amb. Umar Damagum, suspended the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, citing alleged abuse of office and insubordination. In retaliation, Ologunagba and Ajibade declared the suspension of Damagum and the party’s National Secretary, Sen. Samual Anyanwu. The situation escalated when the Ologunagba faction announced Yayari Mohammed as Damagum’s replacement.
Resolution by PDP Governors
During the meeting in Abuja, Governor Bala Mohammed emphasized that the goal was to restore harmony within the party. He noted that a consensus was reached after consulting with various party representatives, including members of the NWC, the National Assembly Caucus, and the Board of Trustees (BoT).
Mohammed stated, “I want to inform you on behalf of the PDP Governors Forum, the Chairman of the Senate Caucus, and the representative of the BoT. We had a family meeting, and we wish to reaffirm that there is no faction in the PDP.”
He further explained that all suspensions had been lifted and that the party would revert to the status quo under the acting chairman, Damagum, until further discussions could take place to resolve outstanding issues.
“There is no party that does not have problems. Some of them are legal, and we do not want to preempt the outcome of legal procedures. So, whatever speculations and perceptions have gone out are wrong,” he added.
Conclusion
The PDP Governors’ Forum’s intervention signifies a commitment to unity and stability within the party as it navigates internal challenges. By lifting the suspensions and emphasizing collaboration, the governors aim to foster a more cohesive and effective party environment as they prepare for future political endeavors.
