The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu following his 64th Independence Day broadcast, asserting that the speech highlighted the administration’s insensitivity to the struggles faced by Nigerians.
In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, the party’s spokesman, the PDP characterized Tinubu’s government as “clueless, insensitive, and unresponsive,” claiming that the president’s speech offered no hope or solutions to the pressing economic and security challenges plaguing the country.
“Nigerians are appalled that the President’s speech was a complete waste of time, as it did not address issues or proffer any solutions to the myriad of economic and security problems created by the APC government, for which Nigerians are hurting,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP expressed disappointment that the president failed to acknowledge the severe hardships faced by citizens, particularly criticizing Tinubu’s claim that only about 10% of Nigerians were experiencing hunger. They highlighted that over 100 million Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities, asserting that the government’s policies have contributed to widespread poverty, unemployment, and starvation.
Additionally, the party condemned Tinubu’s “irreconcilable assurances” of micro-economic improvement and lower living costs, emphasizing that the administration has not successfully reduced fuel prices—a critical factor in the economy. They noted that there has been no significant investment in food production or initiatives to support the productive sector.
The PDP concluded that the president’s failure to address the urgent needs of the populace, such as reducing fuel prices and creating jobs, demonstrates a disconnect between the government and the Nigerian people, especially the youth. They also accused the APC-led administration of undermining democracy, pointing to the speech’s silence on the erosion of credible elections and the protection of citizens’ rights.
