Scotland: Balogun doubtful for Rangers’ old firm derby with Celtic

Nigeria defender, Leon Balogun, is a major doubt for Rangers’ old firm derby against Celtic.

DAILY POST reports that the encounter is slated for the Celtic Park on Saturday.

Balogun sustained a muscle injury in Rangers’ 4-1 win against Kilmarnock last week.

The 35-year-old was replaced at half-time by Ben Davies.

The centre-back could sit out the title decider unless he recovers on time before the game.

Rangers are three points behind leaders Celtic on the table and must win the game to have any chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic won the first meeting last September 1-0 with Kyogo Furuhashi scoring the decisive goal.

Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi has given an update on embattled Yoruba actor Baba Ijesha’s case.

Refreshing your memory, Baba Ijesha was arrested and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for raping a minor, who is the adopted daughter of comedian Princess.

Giving an update on the case in a recent interview, he said Baba Ijesha’s appeal process is still ongoing in court. He claimed that there was no evidence that he slept with the hole; hence, the judge didn’t sentence him to life imprisonment.

Yomi stated that Princess called Baba Ijesha to shoot a skit, and the girl also made a similar statement in court. Yomi stated that the man who slept with the girl was walking freely, and her age wasn’t 14, as many claimed.

“Baba Ijesha’s appeal process is still ongoing in court. There was no evidence that he slept with the girl; that was why the judge didn’t sentence him to life imprisonment. He was called by Princess to shoot a skit, and the girl also said in court that she was called to shoot a skit. The person who actually slept with the girl is walking freely. The girl’s age is not 14. They never gave the court her birth certificate. We are waiting for the appeal court judgement”.

Recall that in 2022, Baba Ijesha had bagged 5 years imprisonment for raping comedienne, Princess’s 14 years old daughter.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, in a two-hour judgement, convicted Baba Ijesha of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault. Taiwo, however, discharged and acquitted him of counts one and count six.

He was thereby sentenced to 16 years imprisonment but would face only 5 years consecutively.

Speaking out, Yomi Fabiyi, who was present in the courtroom, clamoured for the actor to have a right to appeal. He stated that Baba Ijesha still had ample opportunities to challenge the court’s ruling until he had exhausted all his limits.

He also demanded for Princess to be punished for parental negligence.

In October of 2022, Yomi Fabiyi celebrated the embattled actor’s birthday. He took to his Instagram page to share a photo of the embattled actor accompanied by a heartwarming caption and a powerful prayer.

Nollywood actress Bimpe Akintunde has spoken out on the ills of being a single parent.

In an interview with Biola Bayo on her podcast Talk To B, she revealed that nothing kills a woman faster than single parenting.

She stated that being a single mum isn’t something anyone prays for, but life happens as she noted how men are polygamous in nature.

Bimpe admonished men to take responsibility whenever they put a woman in a family way.

“Single mum isn’t what anyone prays for; there is nothing that kills a woman faster than single parenting. Men are polygamous in nature.

Any man that puts a lady in a family way, whether knowingly or unknowingly, should take responsibility”.

Bimpe further disclosed that whenever people meet her, they are surprised at how calm and nice she is, unlike her movie characters. The mother of one made it known that Wasila Coded is just a character, and Bimpe Akintunde is her name.

“When people meet me, they are like they don’t know I am this calm nice and think I am always breaking bottles, but I told them Wasila Coded is just a character, Bimpe Akintunde is my name”.

Last year, in a message to single mothers, Bimpe revealed that she was a single mother for 8 years and wasn’t in a relationship for close to two years.

Disclosing why, she encouraged others to be like her and admitted that being single sucks, but it’s not the end of the world, and she has learned to trust God.

The actress also wrote a touching letter to single mothers, advising them to take it easy on themselves and give themselves a break.

She noted how no one chooses to be a single mom, hence, why they shouldn’t be too hard on themselves. She encouraged them always to be positive, work harder, pray harder, and never give up.

Bimpe Akintunde has since tied the knot to a man with two wives. Following her wedding, she recounted how her daughter left her teary-eyed with her request for a father figure.

She revealed that she was devastated by her daughter’s consistent pestering for a father figure and a sibling that she would cry, complain and lament as all her efforts were proving abortive.

Fast forward to now, her daughter already has a father figure in her husband, and she is grateful for their bond.

EPL: Mason Mount regrets move to Manchester United from Chelsea – Burley

Former Chelsea midfielder, Mason Mount, may be experiencing regrets over his decision to join Manchester United, suggests ex-Chelsea player Craig Burley.

Mount, a key figure at Stamford Bridge, departed for Old Trafford last summer in a £60 million deal after a successful stint with Chelsea, including a pivotal role in their 2021 Champions League triumph.

However, the 25-year-old has encountered challenges in his debut season at Manchester United, marked by injury setbacks and a decline in form that have limited his Premier League starts to just five.

Despite earning a rare start against Crystal Palace on Monday, Mount’s efforts couldn’t avert a humiliating 4-0 loss for the Red Devils, further intensifying scrutiny on his move.

Burley opined that Mount might be questioning his decision to leave Chelsea, suggesting that the transition to Manchester United hasn’t unfolded as expected.

“Mason Mount, obviously he’s had an injury-ravaged season, but even when he’s been fit he looks like a guy who’s thinking, ‘oh my god, I’ve just made a big mistake’,” Burley commented to ESPN.

“Whilst he’s been poor himself and he’s been out for a while, he’s got to be thinking to himself, ‘I’ve made a terrible move here.’”

EPL: Lacking of ambition – Teddy Sheringham blasts Manchester United over failure to sign two players

Former Manchester United striker, Teddy Sheringham, has slammed the club for what he perceives as a “damning lack of ambition” in failing to secure the signings of England talents Harry Kane and Declan Rice last summer.

Kane and Rice both made high-profile moves before the 2023-24 season, with the striker leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich and the midfielder transferring from West Ham to Arsenal.

Since joining Bayern, Kane has delivered an outstanding performance, netting an impressive 44 goals in 44 appearances and aiding Thomas Tuchel’s team in reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

Similarly, Rice has been instrumental for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, featuring in nearly every Premier League game as the Gunners challenge Manchester City for the title.

Sheringham believes Manchester United, currently sitting eighth in the Premier League, are suffering from the absence of players like Kane and Rice.

He sees the failure to secure their signings as a “wake-up” call for his former club.

“I said at the start of the season, it was a damning lack of ambition for a club of Manchester United’s size not to be in the hunt for Harry Kane and Declan Rice,” Sheringham told Genting Casino.

“In the old days, Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] would have snapped both of those players up. These are two top, top players at Premier League and international level.”

“We have never had it so good until Governor Obaseki came onboard as our governor.

“Just about two weeks ago, we qualified for Super Six after pulling a 1-1 draw with champions Delta Queens on the last day of the regular season and our mother the first lady organized a grand reception for us.

“That honour done us is a great motivation and will propel us to higher performance at the Super Six, which is scheduled to begin on May 15. This is just the beginning of resounding results.

“It is not out of place to say that the huge investment and motivation from Edo State Government to the Edo Queens are yielding fruits as the girls have started reciprocating the state government’s kind gesture.

Nigerian crossdresser James Brown couldn’t hold back his tears as he spoke about his deteriorated relationship with his sister.

In an Instagram live session, he promised to grant interviews to the media house to speak about his ordeal with his sister, who he stated is now dead to him. James noted how he made it in life, and because he didn’t want to see his sister suffering, he empowered her, only for her to turn her back on him.

He questioned if anyone noticed that Gracious wasn’t in any of his movies.

“I made it; after making it, I said, let me help my sister so she wouldn’t suffer. From now henceforth, she is dead to me. I will spoil the internet with gist, na I blow Gracious, and I did it out of love. Have you noticed that Gracious isn’t in my movie? It’s beautiful. My mummy dumped me when I was born, so it’s not a new thing if Gracious does the same”.

Kemi Filani reported that James Brown had publicly disowned his sister, Gracious Brown. Issuing a public statement, he claimed that Gracious had supported his house neighbour and his wife to assault him.

James Brown recounted the incident and how Gracious invited his attackers to a private party to assault him with a promise to share more information later.

Following the incident, Gracious moved out of the house that they rented. They refuted the claims of being involved in any attack against him and corrected his statement regarding her absence from his movie, stating that he had prevented her from participating.

Out of respect for her elder brother and the mother they share, Gracious refused to speak too much about the matter. She, however, asked for time to heal as she assured online users that she would still speak on everything at the right time and with evidence.

Sharing a cryptic post on Wednesday, he stated that he now understands that there is no family or friends when one becomes famous, as one tends to attract enemies even within their blood. He added that it is part of his life story as he described his incident with his sister, Gracious Brown, as a betrayal.

In March, James Brown revealed he was taking a break from social media as he archived all his Instagram posts, leaving only one post. Giving reasons, he disclosed that his mental health was at stake both spiritually and health-wise.

Days later, the internet sensational stormed his village to seek deliverance after suffering a spiritual attack. He further revealed that sometimes he sees his rival, Bobrisky, other drag queens, and his friends in his dreams. As such, his father told him to come home to seek prayers.

Super Eagles: Finidi right to demand for foreign assistants – Pinnick

Former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, says Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has the right to choose a foreign assistant if he desires.

Finidi is yet to put together his backroom staff a week after his appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The 53-year-old has reportedly rejected NFF’s proposal to work with two of his former teammates, Emmanuel Amuneke and Daniel Amokachi.

The former winger, instead, is keen to appoint an expatriate as his assistant.

Pinnick has jumped to the defence of the coach, insisting that he has the right to pick his assistants.

“For his assistants, it is very tricky. It is normal for him to demand foreign assistants if he so desires. Bonfrere Jo was a foreign assistant to Westerhof and later took over the job. Oliseh had foreign a assistant, Siasia had a foreign assistant. It is not new and it is not also bad for him to demand same,” Pinnick told Arise TV.

“Finidi is well equipped; he played for Ajax and they over there have developmental football mentoring in kicking the ball, trapping and all that. I think he is well positioned for the job.

“For Amuneke, he is also technically sound, but I am talking of the seamless transition from Peseiro; it will benefit the team much for Finidi to have the job and thank God he is there.

“Backroom staffing is more scientific right now. If he says he needs three back room assistants, perhaps one for goalkeeper training, the others are for other positions.

“The assistant coaches are the engine room of the success of any coach because they see what the coach can’t see.

“But then, it depends on funding from the federation, but I think it is not out of place. Finidi should be allowed to do what he wants to do. But if there is a paucity of funds, they can discuss it with him.”

The deceased was identified as Mike Ode.

The incident happened at Shaapera community in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.

A relation of the deceased, Nicholas Ode, disclosed that his brother was brutally killed in Shaapera village in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state on Monday.

He said the corpse had been deposited at the morgue of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

“Unfortunately, we were told that one of the four civil defence guys, which is my brother, was gunned down, while others escaped,” he said.

The NSCDC Command Public Relations Officer, Mike Ejelikwu, confirmed the incident.

He said the death of the personnel would not deter the command from performing its constitutional mandate of providing security for every law-abiding citizen in the state.

“NSCDC has a specialised squad called the Agro Rangers located across Gwer West, Logo, Apa, Kwande, Guma, among others, to provide security for Agro-allied investment, be it animal husbandry or crop production,” he disclosed.

He added that the deceased was killed during a gun duel with the bandits, but added that there was heavy casualty on the part of the bandits.

“We lost one agro ranger who incidentally was the commander of the operation,” he said, adding that the command was already in touch with his family.

All the minors who fall within the age bracket of 13–17 years are residents of Agah Village, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.

It was gathered that the suspect, who specializes in harassing and sexually assaulting minors, has been under the surveillance of the command following several complaints about his nefarious activities.

“One of the victims, Joy Godfrey, who bravely reported the case at the Gender Unit of the command on April 3, 2024, revealed horrifying details of her ordeal. She disclosed that Prophet Olayinka Ajiboye lured her into an unfamiliar house in Sango and sexually assaulted her.

“Additionally, he compelled her to swear with the Bible and instructed her never to discuss the incident with anyone, threatening her with fatal consequences if she dared to speak about it.

“The second victim who suffered similar abuse (name withheld) also revealed that the suspect started having canal knowledge with her at the age of 16. She further disclosed that the suspect impregnated her and gave her drugs to abort the baby, resulting in severe bleeding that lasted for several months. The suspect threatened to kill her if she reveals their illicit relationship to anyone.”

“The third victim (name withheld), who is also a member of the church, disclosed that the suspect defiled her at the age of 13. She mentioned that she couldn’t report to her mother because the suspect consistently threatened her, warning that she would die if she exposed him to anyone.”

The spokesman further disclosed that the suspect confessed to the crime, blaming his act on the devil.

NSCDC State Commandant, Umar Mohammed, expressed concern over the infamous act and directed the Head of Gender Unit to conduct a detailed investigation and ensure that the suspect is prosecuted diligently.”

He also appealed to the public to support the command’s fight against all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and assured that perpetrators would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the land.

Herdsman allegedly chops off farmer’s hand in Kaduna community

A suspected herdsman, Wuzaipa Salisu, has allegedly cut the hand of a farmer, Bitrus Chawai, in Damakasuwa community, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

DAILY POST gathered that the victim, Bitrus Chawai, according to Barnabas, his younger brother, had travelled home ahead of this year’s farming when he was attacked by the herder.

Barnabas told DAILY POST on Wednesday that, “The victim (Bitrus), a former NULGE Chairman in the Kauru Local Government Area and currently a trustee at the state level, visited his home on Sunday to clear the land in preparation for this year’s farming.”

He further explained that his elder brother went to his farm, which is not more than 200km from their family house and discovered that cows entered one of his farms and ate beans, saying that he approached the boy only to be attacked.

According to him, “Their target was to machete his head, but he used his hand to shield his head. As a result, his arm was chopped off.”

He explained that attacks by herdsmen on people in the community have been continuous, noting that two people were similarly attacked last year.

Barnabas stated that their father personally took him (the victim) to the Divisional Police Station in Damakasuwa, Kauru Local Government Area, to lay a complaint to them for their prompt attention in order to bring the perpetrator to face the full wrath of the law.

He lamented, “As we speak, my brother has been bleeding profusely since yesterday (Tuesday); we have been referred to another hospital in Kaduna.”

The spokesperson for the state’s police command, ASP Mansir Hassan, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to him.

Ban on party activities: Benue APC chieftain sues Gov Alia

Worried by the continued barricade of Benue State’s secretariat of the All Progressive Congress, APC, by the police and the ban on all the activities of the party on the order of Governor Hyacinth Alia, a chieftain of the party and a legal practitioner, Vershima Akaangee has filed a fundamental human rights suit challenging the order.

Akaangee, in suit No. MHC/845M/2024, is also challenging the constitutionality of the order banning political activities by Governor Alia.

Joined in the suit as first, second, third and fourth respondents, respectively, are the Inspector General of Police; Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command; Governor Alia of Benue State; and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Benue State.

According to the suit, Barrister Akaangee, kicked against the letter by the 3rd respondent, placing an embargo on political meetings, the use of the APC state secretariat by the 2nd respondent and the lack of action by the state actors. He added that he was seeking the enforcement of his fundamental human rights to peaceful assembly and association, which the respondents and their agents have violated and have continued to infringe despite the clear provision of Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The applicant further stated that the continuous barricade of the APC state secretariat situated at No. 75 J.S. Tarka Way, Makurdi, Benue State, by the 1st to 4th respondents, thereby preventing registered members, including the applicant, from accessing and/or carrying out political activities, is a total violation of fundamental rights.

In the suit, the applicant sought an order from the court directing the respondents to remove the barricade and vacate the premises and the road leading to the Benue APC State Secretariat forthwith.

He also sought an order of the court restraining the 1st to 4th respondents, either by themselves, servants, agents or representatives, from interfering with the rights to peaceful assembly and association of the applicant, aimed at frustrating members of the APC in Benue State, among others. In addition, he also sought an order awarding N5 billion damages against the respondents for infringing on his fundamental human rights.

He urged the court to hold that the 3rd respondent cannot compel registered members of APC in Benue State against their will to abandon a national political party for a faction that has no fruits and, also urged the court to hold and grant this application in the interest of justice.

May 23, 2024, has been fixed for the hearing of the case.

It can be recalled that Gov Alia in March 2024 ordered security agencies to lock up the state secretariat of APC in Makurdi, citing escalating insecurity, but findings have revealed that the order was a result of the ongoing supremacy battle between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume and the governor, which has led to the party splintering into two factions. The faction chaired by Austin Agada is backed by Akume while the other, chaired by Benjamin Omakolo, is pro-Alia.

The 31st edition of the New York African Film Festival (NYAFF), hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, opens today with the North American premiere of Tolu Ajayi’s feature film “Over The Bridge.” The film tells the story of Folarin Marinho (Ozzy Agu), an investment banker with secrets whose life is turned upside down when his ethics are compromised over a controversial rail construction project.

Since its inception in 1993, the festival has been at the “forefront of showcasing African and diaspora filmmakers’ unique storytelling through the moving image.” This year’s festival theme, “Convergence of Time,” explores the intersection of historical and contemporary roles played by individuals representing Africa and its diaspora in the art world. With over 50 films from more than 25 countries, the festival invites audiences to delve into the fascinating convergence of archival and modern experimentalism, transcending the boundaries of space and time.

The festival boasts a diverse lineup, featuring several films New York debuts. These include Kenneth Gyang’s dark comedy “This Is Lagos,” which follows aspiring rapper Stevo navigating the dangers of his criminal past after a heist gone wrong. Uche Aguh’s musical romance “Dynamite” explores musician Kiki’s unhappy marriage with her husband/manager and her whirlwind romance with a new bassist.

Veteran filmmaker Ngozi Onwurah will lead a masterclass hosted by the African Film Festival, sharing her insights on using cinema to explore the dynamics of the socioeconomic status quo.

“Over The Bridge” premieres today and tomorrow at the festival (May 8th and 9th) with a Q&A post-screening session today with Tolu Ajayi. “Over The Bridge” is also the highest nominated film in this year’s AMVCA with twelve nominations in these categories: Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup, Best Writing In A Movie, Best Director, Best Movie, Best Supporting Actor (Ropo Ewenla), Best Supporting Actress (Joke Silva), and Best Lead Actress (Segilola Ogidan).
