Nigerian celebrity stylist and designer Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Empire has called out the African Magic Viewers Choice Award AMVCA over their lack of theme each year.

Ahead of the award show this weekend, she noted how AMVCA has never declared a theme for their event. She questioned why people wouldn’t dress how they like when they don’t give a theme.

Tiannah noted how AMVCA is our biggest creative award show in Nigeria, and she feels actresses and artists take a moment to express themselves and stand out during the away ceremony. She pointed out how some conform to what’s expected of them per societal norms, and some go out of the box.

She added that until AMVCA gives them a theme to adhere to yearly, everyone should continue to have fun at the show and express themselves. Wishing everyone the best, she said she looks forward to all the amazing looks on the red carpet.

“AMVCA has never declared a theme for their event, so why do you feel people shouldn’t dress how they like??

Amvca Awards is our biggest creative award show in Nigeria, and I feel our actresses/artists,
Take this moment to express yourself and stand out,
Some conform to what’s expected of them as per societal norms, and some go out of the box,
So I feel until Amvca starts giving us a theme to adhere to yearly,
Everyone should continue to have fun at the show and express themselves.
I wish you all the best of luck,
Looking forward to all the amazing looks on the red carpet”.

Toyin Lawani questions why AMVCA doesn't give a theme

Over the years, Toyin Abraham has become well-known for her creative and over-the-top fashion designs.

Last year, during the Christmas celebration, Toyin had ditched the usual pyjamas for Christmas shoots and opted for a more creative and out-of-the-box outfit. The wife of Segun Wealth made a dress and a cape from 1000 pepper and 70 mops.

Sharing the inspiration behind her outfit, Toyin stated that she has been through a lot this year, which led her to put a lot of thought into her yearly Christmas shoot.

Her outfit no doubt caused a stir online as while some praised her for her creativity, others bashed her. Reacting to the criticisms, Toyin told her haters to jump off a cliff as she is the King of Fashion while adding that fashion is pain.

Months back, fans of Toyin Lawani had hailed her after American rapper Cardi B’s daughter, Kulture, rocked one of her outfits.

The celebrity stylist, who couldn’t believe her eyes, shared a video of the 5-year-old wearing a hand-painted jacket designed by her as she expressed joy at finally being recognised internationally, especially by a celebrity like Cardi B.

It was gathered that the bride known as Florence Friday requested for N30K from her groom-to-be, Morgak James, on the 28th of March 2024 to book for her desired wedding gown.

However, the groom was only able to raise N15K and promised to give her the rest the following week.

The bride-to-be flared up over this and threatened to cancel the wedding over this.

Morgak was able to get the N30,000 two days later, and he delivered it to Florence so that the reservation could be made. But this decision resulted in an additional request from his future wife.
After gathering direct information, a media outlet said that Florence asked Morgak to move out of his family home and into an apartment.

Following a long argument, they decided to stay in the family home for two months following the wedding before moving into an apartment of their own. Prior to Morgak making the introductions, signing the church documents, and paying the bride price, this arrangement was reached.

However, Morgak was shocked a few days before the big day when he got a call informing him that his fiancée had canceled the wedding because she had refused to leave his family house.

The groom-to-be James Morgak wrote on his Facebook page …

If you’re on a budget but still want to flaunt a chic and elegant hairstyle, here are popular affordable styles that will make you look expensive.

Affordable African hairstyles that look luxuriously expensive

Embracing African hairstyles not only connects us to our heritage but also offers a variety of stylish, eye-catching looks.

If you’re on a budget but still want to flaunt a chic and elegant hairstyle, here are nine popular African hairstyles that you can achieve for less.

Bantu knots are small, coiled buns secured against the side of the head. Not only are they stylish and protective, but they also work well with natural or relaxed hair.

This style is particularly effective in humid climates, keeping you cool and fashionable. These knots cost between Sh800 – Sh1,200.

Cornrows are a classic, tight braiding style close to the scalp. Sleek and simple straight-back cornrows offer a timeless look that can be both casual and formal. Add gold thread or cuffs to elevate the style instantly.

The versatility and low maintenance of cornrows make them a favourite for all ages. They cause between Sh1,000 – 1,500.

Almost similar to cornrows, flat twists are created with two strands of hair twisted flat against the scalp.

It’s a fun, youthful look that’s both affordable and stylish. It costs between Sh1,500 – 1,800.

Shareholders of Zenith Bank Plc Wednesday approved the proposed final dividend payment of N3.50 per share, bringing the total dividend for the 2023 financial year to N4.00 per share, with a total value of N125.59 billion.

This is the highest dividend payout by any bank, the bank stated.

This was the major highlight of the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the bank held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Dr Jim Ovia, thanked the shareholders for their unflinching support and loyalty to the Zenith brand, saying this had been instrumental to the bank’s consistent superior performance.

The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ebenezer Onyeagwu, thanked Ovia for his mentorship in the last five years while he served as CEO, which he attributed to his success, saying the chairman had provided the pedestal for the bank’s continued superior performance.

He said, “As I prepare to pass the baton to Dame (Dr) Adaora Umeoji, I am confident in the bank’s trajectory under her leadership. I would like to express my profound gratitude to our founder and Chairman, Dr Jim Ovia, CFR, and to the board, shareholders, customers and staff for their steadfast support throughout my tenure. I earnestly request that you extend the same level of support to my successor. It has been a remarkable journey, and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together. As I commence the mandatory regulatory cooling-off period, I am filled with optimism for Zenith Bank’s future, assured that we are on the path to even greater success.”

National Coordinator of the Pragmatic Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mrs Bisi Bakare, said, “We the shareholders are very pleased today to receive a final dividend of N3.50 kobo from Zenith Bank.

“Following an interim dividend of 50 kobo paid last December, the total dividend for the 2023 Annual General Meeting amounts to N4.00 – the highest in the banking sector to date. We truly appreciate this and are optimistic that the transition to a holding company will bring even greater returns.”

Also speaking, President of the Association of the Rights of Nigerian Shareholders (AARNS), Dr Faruk Umar, said, “The bank has performed exceptionally well, particularly in terms of succession planning. It’s encouraging to see the new managing director promoted from within, reinforcing our belief in the bank’s leadership development.”

Daily Trust reports that the Zenith Bank Group achieved a remarkable triple-digit growth of 125 per cent in gross earnings, from N945.6bn in the previous year to N2.132trn in 2023. This was driven by a 112 per cent YoY growth in interest income and a 141 per cent YoY growth in non-interest income. Customer deposits grew by 69 per cent, reflecting the bank’s market leadership and customers’ trust. Operating expenses grew by 32 per cent YoY. Total assets rose by 66 per cent, largely due to growth in total deposits and the revaluation of foreign currency deposits

In 2024, the Zenith Bank Group plans to expand its reach following its restructuring into a holding company structure, adding new verticals to its businesses and pursuing growth in all chosen markets locally and internationally.

I’m still alive – Man says after burying self in coffin for 23 hrs

A Nigerian man, identified as Young C, who picked the challenge of spending 24 hours buried alive in a coffin, says in a viral video that he is still alive.

The skitmaker commenced the challenge on Wednesday and spent the whole day entombed in a wooden coffin equipped with a pillow, a hand fan, bedsheets, a power bank camera, and two light bulbs.

Young C live-streamed his stay underground via his YouTube channel.

In an update on his Instagram account on Thursday, the skitmaker said while panting that he is still alive, “I am still fine, I am okay. A lot of you might think something has happened, but nothing has happened, I am fine.

“My problem is just that I have run out of water, I might be forced to drink this (my urine). Guys, I am fine”.

In an earlier update, Young C revealed that he had been buried for over 8 hours and was experiencing physical discomfort, including excessive sweating. He shared a video from the coffin, showing his camera and light still functioning, and expressed his determination to complete the challenge.

Police investigate illegal embalming of Mohbad’s body

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force is currently escalating its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of the renowned singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad.

The inquiry was initiated after Mohbad’s family and those involved in the ongoing investigation regarding the unauthorized embalming of the deceased’s body were summoned.

Boluwatife Adeyemo, also known as Darosha, who served as Mohbad’s Personal Assistant, was previously questioned at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters alongside the deceased’s parents, Joseph and Abosede.

Following Darosha’s interrogation, law enforcement officials have called for the appearance of all individuals mentioned in his statement for further questioning.

Monisola Odumosu, who heads the family’s legal team, confirmed that the subsequent round of questioning took place on Tuesday at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters in Lagos State. Odumosu also mentioned that the police are actively working to uncover the identity of the “illegal mortician.”

He added: “The police will reveal to the public soon, who illegally embalmed the body of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.

“The police stated they would work on their report and continue investigations which will be directed to the Legal Department of the force for a recommendation.

“The meeting was held at Zone 2 and present at the meeting were Mr. Joseph Aloba (Mohbad’s father), Boluwatife Adeyemi (aka Darosha), Adura Aloba (Mohbad’s younger brother), Mrs. Abosede Olumuyi (Mohbad’s mother) and Cynthia Omowunmi Aloba (Mohbad’s wife). Others include Iya Lolade and Samuel (Mr. Joseph Aloba’s witnesses) and lawyers to the parties”

The family’s legal representatives had formally lodged a petition with the police, as directed by their clients, asserting that Boluwatife Adeyemo, the personal assistant to the late Mohbad, had engaged in the unlawful embalming of the singer’s body.
