Looking for Nigerian foods rich in fat? Then you’ve landed on the right post
You see, many traditional Nigerian foods are high in fat but before we get to the list, I want to quickly point out that…
Dietary fat was once thought to be unhealthy, however, research studies  now shows that some fats offer amazing health benefits.

Here are some high-fat Nigerian foods and their fat content:

Nigerian Fat-Rich Foods List

Here’s the list and their fat count

FG May Need Supplementary Budget To Pay Minimum Wage – IMF

0
2 mn read

The Federal Government is contemplating a supplementary budget to accommodate a proposed increase in the minimum wage, as ongoing negotiations are likely to exceed the allocations in the 2024 fiscal plan, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In its latest staff country report on Nigeria, the IMF mentioned, “The authorities noted that a supplementary budget may be needed to accommodate the outcome of the ongoing wage structure negotiations, which may exceed what they had included in the 2024 budget.”

Naija News reports that the adjustment is crucial as the government is also considering raising domestic and external borrowing ceilings to avoid new borrowings from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Ways and Means facility.

Negotiations for the new minimum wage have been central to discussions between Organized Labour and the government.

These discussions aim to ease the economic burdens faced by workers due to recent policy changes, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange markets, which have pushed the cost of living higher.

Labour leaders have demanded a substantial increase in the minimum wage for the lowest-ranked workers from N30,000 to N615,000, although there are indications that the tripartite committee might settle for N70,000.

In the 2024 budget, the government initially allocated N6.48 trillion for personnel costs. However, this figure may fall short of the requirements due to the new wage structure.

The IMF warns that Nigeria’s budget deficit for 2024 is expected to exceed initial estimates, driven by implicit subsidies and rising debt interest expenses.

“The drivers are lower oil/gas revenue projections, reflecting IMF oil price forecasts but incorporating recent production gains; higher implicit fuel and electricity subsidies; continued suspension of excise measures included in the MTEF; and higher interest costs,” the report elaborates.

Finance Minister, Wale Edun, had aimed to reduce the budget deficit from 6.1% in 2023 to 3.8% in 2024. Nonetheless, the IMF projects a larger deficit, advising, “Based on staff’s projections, the authorities must raise the domestic and external borrowing ceilings to prevent renewed recourse to CBN financing.”

The report also supports an “opportunistic issuance” of Eurobonds and possible official financing as integral parts of the 2024 financing mix, amidst the financial adjustments required to stabilize Nigeria’s economy and address the extensive social needs of its population.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Super Eagles Injury List Grows Ahead Of South Africa Clash

< 1 mn read

Super Eagles of Nigeria could play their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic without some of the team’s top players.

Recall that on Monday, May 13, Naija News reported that Super Eagles’ 24-year-old winger, Samuel Chukwueze sustained a muscle injury while playing for AC Milan against Cagliari.

Chukwueze’s injury could keep the former Villarreal midfielder away from the Super Eagles for the must-win games in June.

As if that wasn’t bad enough for Nigeria who are currently third in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers behind Rwanda and South Africa, two big-name players have joined the list of injured players.

The latest big-name players to join the injury list are Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen and 25-year-old Boavista defender, Bruno Onyemaechi.

Onyemaechi’s knee injury has ruled him out for the remaining games of the season which means that the defender stands no chance of being a part of Finidi George’s squad for the qualification games.

As for Osimhen, the 25-year-old striker sustained an injury during Napoli’s Serie A game against Bologna last weekend. He was not seen in training with the team on Monday, May 13.

A statement from Napoli said Osimhen has undergone a recovery work for a muscle strain which means he could be available for the Super Eagles this June.

Other Super Eagles players who might not be available for the World Cup qualification games due to fitness issues are Moses Simon, Zaidu Sanusi and Tyrone Ebuehi.

Note that the Super Eagles are expected to play against South Africa on June 7 and against Benin Republic on June 10 as they continue their push for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Former Nigeria international, Victor Ikpeba, has described the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa as the “game of our lives”.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on a bad note by drawing against minors like Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Thanks to the draws, the Super Eagles are now occupying the third spot in Group C, a point behind second-placed South Africa, and two points below first-placed Rwanda.

Hence, to pick up their pace in their push to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in eight years, the Nigerian side must beat South Africa in Uyo on June 7, and do the same against Benin Republic in Abidjan on June 10.

Victor Ikpeba believes that the Super Eagles’ new head coach, Finidi George can lead the team to victory against South Africa who are the biggest threat to Nigeria in Group C. He stressed that the team has all the players required for the assignment.

He also believes that the experience that took the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on February 11 after beating South Africa in the semi-finals, should be enough to help Nigeria against the Bafana Bafana again.

“The game against South Africa is the game of our lives,” Ikpeba said on Supersports Monday Night Football.

“Finidi has the players having only recently reached the final of the AFCON, which was one of the toughest ever.

“The boys know what is at stake.

“They have to be focused and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure they beat South Africa.

“It won’t be easy, but it can be done.”

The campaign team of Labour Party Presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi has spoken on the possibility of their principal joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, erstwhile Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in Abuja.

Speaking during an interview with Punch, the Chief Spokesman of Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, Yunusa Tanko addressed the chances of Obi returning to the PDP or the possibility of a merger between the Labour Party and the PDP.

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has removed all materials associated with the All Progressives Congress, APC, from his campaign office.

Naija News learnt that the campaign office is domiciled inside the four-storey building at Ayinke Towers, rechristened Oranmiyan House, and located along the Gbongan-Ibadan road in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The highrise building served as Aregbesola’s campaign office and later the office of The Osun Progressives, TOP, before its dissolution in 2022.

According to Daily Post, the white-coloured building that had previously worn the colours of APC and had several poles bearing flags of the party and national flags adorning its frontage had been given a distinctly new look.

Also, the gigantic photos of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor and later APC National Chairman Bisi Akande, and ex-President Muhammadu Buhari that formerly adorned the building have been removed.

The APC materials have been replaced with large-size images of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Chief Bola Ige and the former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola’s picture, inserted in the middle.

The huge inscription of the APC logo was reportedly replaced with that of the Omoluabi Progressive Caucus, with the same remodelling carried out at Aregbesola’s campaign office in his Ilesa hometown.

This development comes amidst preparations being set in motion for the 2026 gubernatorial election in the state.

Speaking on the latest development, a member of the Omoluabi Progressive Caucus in Ilesa, Kazeem Olanrewaju, in an interview with the aforementioned publication, said they are trying to return to the progressive ideas that led to the creation of the APC.

Olanrewaju stated that Tinubu and Akande have derailed from the progressive idea, stressing that the President had no achievement in the last one year of ruling the country.

He assured that the APC logos and banners would be brought back at a later time.

He said, “Tinubu and Akande have both derailed from the progressive ideas, saying the progressive politics which started with Awolowo and Bola Ige, is not about power, but about impacting lives.

“No achievement in a year of running Nigeria. What is progressive about running Nigeria for a year without achievement.”

“We will bring back banners later.”

Why we can’t renovate Abeokuta train station road – Ogun Govt

0
2 mn read

The Ogun State Government has said reconstruction on the Laderin-Train Station road in Abeokuta, the state capital, cannot begin unless the Federal Government grants approval.

Recall that in 2023, some residents of Laderin, Olokuta, and Idi-Aba communities in the Abeokuta South Local Government area of the state had lamented the deplorable state of the road.

The road connects over 40 communities and serves as a main link to the popular Wole Soyinka Train Station.

Residents and commuters described the condition of the road as hellish, especially when it rains.

Responding to the agitation, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr Ade Akinsanya noted that the government had already programmed the road for reconstruction.

However, the state government on Tuesday in a post made on its X handle said the worn-out pathway leading to the train station falls under the purview of the Federal Government and requires permission from the Minister of Works before reconstruction can begin.

The post reads: “On the worn-out pathway leading to the Abeokuta train station!

“This is a matter close to our hearts. Enhancing this route holds promise of rendering train travel more enjoyable.

“Yet, we tread cautiously, refraining from vocalizing our concerns, lest it be misconstrued as making excuses.

“Debates ensue, tangled in bureaucratic intricacies, as this particular stretch, albeit short, falls under the purview of the Federal Government, responsible for its upkeep.

“To embark on reconstruction, the State Government requires a permission from the Minister. However, obtaining such authorization proves a sluggish ordeal, hindered by bureaucratic inertia.

“It’s noteworthy that the Station Complex was conceptualized to coincide with the development of its surrounding arteries, an integral part of the overarching scheme.

“Recent developments have seen the Federal Government granting approval for the Ogun State Government to undertake the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road, a triumph after years of persistent appeals by the incumbent Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.”

Politicians will no longer contest election with fake certificates – Nigerian institute vows

0
2 mn read

The National Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria has announced plans to ensure that dubious politicians no longer contest elections with forged certificates in the country.

Dr Iliyasu Gashinbaki, Pioneer President and Chairman Governing Council, made this known during a meeting with the leadership of national Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the institute will work with IPAC to help in the authentication of documents of aspirants even before the primary elections in the 2027 general elections.

“Politics is too important to be left in the hands of politicians. We will engage all political parties, through IPAC to see how we can strengthen the electoral management process. We’ve had several instances where we know that if forensic tools had been deployed it would have saved the country embarrassment and even the stress the electorate went through,” he said.

“A typical case in point is the case of Bayelsa where the election of an elected governor was nullified because of certificate forgery that shouldn’t have happened.

“The person that the masses elected was a different person and the court nulified it. We’re talking to all the political parties in Nigeria. We’ve seen the decline of governance in Africa .

“This is the reason for multiple coups across Africa. One of the ways to address impunity is to tackle the recruitment process of people that occupy political offices from the councilor to the President.

“For this reason, we are setting up two laboratories that would be too critical for the 2027 general elections to ensure that no dubious or forged document of any kind will be submitted by politicians during the elections.

“We’ve had instances of forged NYSC certificates, tax clearance certificates, academic certificates filled in by politicians like in the case of Bayelsa, to stand for elections and this leads the country to embarrassment and the electorate are shortchanged.

“We’ll work with IPAC to help in authentication of the documents of candidates that would stand elections before the primary elections.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of IPAC, and National Chairman of Allied People’s Movement, APM, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, said, “One day, I pray we’ll all agree as Nigerians that we want a better system for all of us.

“As long as we refuse to domesticate the solutions to our problems or refused to identify the foundation of our problems because I think some of these problems are self-inflicted because we know what to do to get out of the mess we’re in but somehow, for personal gain, we do not want to.

“This partnership, for me and the council, is a welcome development. It must be encouraged and consolidated.”

Troops kill Shekau’s top ally, Tahir Baga

The troops of Theatre Command, North East, ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ have successfully eliminated a top commander of the Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, otherwise known as Boko Haram, Tahir Baga.

This followed the continuation of major offensive at terrorists enclaves in Sambisa Forest.

According to Vanguard, sources revealed that Tahir was neutralized on May 13, 2024, when the troops unleashing the major operation codenamed ‘Operation Desert Sanity III’, moved down terrorists’ enclaves of Shababul Umma, Garin Panel Beater and Lagara Anguwan Gwaigwai right at the heart of the forest.

Intelligence sources and Zagazola Makama, a Counterinsurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region also confirmed the incident to newsmen on Tuesday.

It was gathered that, in the course of the offensive, contact was made with the terrorists which led to the defeat of the terrorist top commander as well as some of his lieutenants while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.
