Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode expressed reluctance to dismiss any possibilities, including the involvement of MOSSAD, in the death of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, given the unusual circumstances of the crash. Raisi, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others, reportedly died in a helicopter crash, confirmed by CNN and Iranian news outlets.

The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, following Iran’s retaliatory strike on Israel and ongoing conflict in Gaza. Fani-Kayode extended condolences to Iran and urged scrutiny of the narrative attributing the crash to bad weather.

He pondered whether MOSSAD, the Israeli intelligence agency, might have played a role, cautioning against hasty conclusions. While acknowledging Raisi’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the tragic event.

A paediatrician has clarified that breast milk is not a remedy for jaundice.

A consultant paediatrician has dispelled the misconception that applying breast milk to the eyes of jaundiced babies can cure the condition. Dr. Funmi Adesokan, a Consultant Paediatrician at Osun State University Teaching Hospital, clarified this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo.

Dr. Adesokan explained that jaundice occurs due to the excessive breakdown of red blood cells, leading to the production of bilirubin, a yellow pigment. Contrary to popular belief, applying breast milk or other herbal remedies to the eyes does not alter this process or effectively clear jaundice. She also debunked claims that pawpaw water or other herbal concoctions can treat jaundice.

Regarding treatment, Dr. Adesokan mentioned the use of phototherapy, a specific type of light exposure, to treat jaundice in babies. This therapy requires a specific wavelength of light and continuous exposure to the baby’s skin. She cautioned against using sunlight as a substitute, as it could be harmful to the baby’s delicate skin.

Jaundice in babies can result from various factors such as blood group incompatibility, enzyme deficiencies, infections, liver abnormalities, and insufficient breastfeeding. Dr. Adesokan stressed the importance of seeking medical attention to determine the type, cause, and severity of jaundice for appropriate treatment.

While physiologic jaundice, a mild form, may not require treatment, pathologic jaundice can lead to serious complications such as brain damage if left untreated. Dr. Adesokan emphasized the need for prompt medical evaluation and treatment to prevent adverse outcomes.

Additionally, Dr. Adesokan encouraged mothers to attend antenatal care (ANC) appointments to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery. She emphasized the importance of breastfeeding on demand every two to three hours and suggested taking advantage of government primary healthcare centers for affordable ANC services.

Former Kaduna lawmaker Shehu Sani has urged the Federal Government to address the issue of minimum wage to prevent potential strikes from organized labor. In an interview with Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST, Sani emphasized that increasing the minimum wage is feasible for the Nigerian government.

He highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerians trying to survive on less than N100,000, stating that the current proposed wage of N45,000-48,000 is unrealistic when considering various expenses. Sani urged the government to seriously consider the demands of labor unions, especially given the country’s recent economic reforms and increased revenue from the removal of subsidies.

Sani argued that the government has the financial means to implement a minimum wage of N615,000, suggesting that a living wage for workers is reasonable and necessary. He acknowledged the sacrifices required for economic reforms but stressed the importance of equitable distribution of benefits across society.

According to Sani, discontent among citizens arises from the perception that they are bearing the brunt of economic reforms without reaping the benefits. He emphasized the need for shared sacrifices and fair distribution of resources to address the grievances of workers.

The Federal Government has announced the phased rollout of a student loan scheme, starting initially with federal institutions. Akintunde Swayerr, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, revealed this information in an interview with Arise Television, which was monitored by Swayerr stated that the student loan application portal will open on May 24th for interested applicants, while the government is currently conducting a sensitization campaign to educate Nigerians about the scheme’s workings.

He emphasized that the loan scheme aims to address the financing gap for students in Nigeria, empowering them to become more productive and ultimately benefiting the country. Swayerr highlighted that on April 3rd, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a significant act into law, which focuses on bridging the financing gap for individuals seeking tertiary education or vocational training to enhance their marketability and contribution to society.

Under this scheme, all tertiary institution fees will be covered, along with provision for student upkeep. Swayerr explained that the rollout will occur in phases, starting with federal institutions due to the high number of students in the public sector requiring financial assistance. He expressed the intention for the scheme to have a nationwide reach and ensure equal opportunities for eligible individuals across the country.

Israel has refuted accusations of genocide concerning its actions in the Gaza Strip before the United Nations court.

Israel has rejected allegations of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip and has argued before the International Court of Justice that its military actions in Rafah were acts of self-defense. The head of Israel’s delegation, Gilad Noam, denounced the case brought by South Africa as a distortion of reality and accused them of abusing international law in a cynical manner. During the hearing, a woman interrupted one of Israel’s legal representatives, shouting “Liar” before being escorted out by security personnel.

South Africa’s lawsuit seeks an urgent appeal for the ICJ to order Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, citing ongoing genocide against the Palestinian population and calling for unhindered access for investigators, media, and humanitarian aid. The urgency of the application stems from the Israeli military offensive in Rafah, which began on May 6, endangering the lives of 1.5 million Palestinians concentrated in the city.

Israel’s delegation countered by characterizing Rafah as a Hamas military stronghold launching rockets at Israel and claimed that Hamas is holding numerous hostages. They also asserted that Israel is providing humanitarian aid and taking measures to protect civilians. The Gaza conflict was sparked by a massacre of approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel by Hamas fighters and allied groups on October 7.

Toyin, who is married to Kolawole Ajeyemi, visited Ibrahim’s film village and described it as beautiful. In a video she shared online, Ibrahim and other cast members joked with Toyin, telling her not to eat too much because of her stomach. Toyin defended herself, noting that she had lost weight and claimed she only chews gum.

“I went to visit my darling uncle @ibrahimchatta_lordthespis. His film village is so beautiful, I mean extremely beautiful.”

It’s refreshing to see Toyin in high spirits, especially after being in the spotlight for negative reasons recently.

A week before the event, Toyin reignited her rivalry with Funke by announcing a sequel to her popular movie, Alakada, set to premiere in December. This divided fans, as some felt she was imitating Funke, who had announced a sequel to her hit movie, Jenifa, a week earlier.

Toyin also posted a cryptic message about imperfection, emphasizing that everyone makes mistakes but learns, grows, and moves on.

Additionally, Toyin warned her overzealous fans against responding negatively to her critics. She urged those running fan pages in her name to stop bullying or cursing others, stating that such actions do not affect her.

Nelson Shardey, a 74-year-old Ghanaian man, has initiated legal proceedings against the United Kingdom’s Home Office following the denial of his application for permanent residency despite residing in the country for 42 years. Shardey arrived in the UK in 1977 and has been a resident for nearly five decades.

Despite his long-term residence, Shardey received a shocking response from the Home Office, indicating that he would need to wait an additional ten years before being considered for permanent residency. This unexpected decision came as a blow to Shardey, who had assumed he was a British citizen after arriving in the UK in 1977 to pursue studies in accountancy on a student visa that permitted him to work.

Shardey’s realization of his non-British status occurred in 2019, prompting him to seek legal recourse. Despite his lifelong contributions to the UK, including paying taxes and establishing himself within the community as a retired newsagent, Shardey now faces the prospect of significant financial burdens, including potential healthcare costs, as he navigates the complexities of his residency status.

Throughout his decades in the UK, Shardey held various jobs, including roles at Mother’s Pride bread, Kipling’s Cakes, and Bendick’s Chocolate. He remained committed to his life in the UK, even amidst personal challenges such as a coup in his native Ghana, which impacted his family’s financial ability to support him.

Shardey’s situation took a distressing turn when he applied for a passport in 2019 to travel to Ghana following the death of his mother, only to discover that he was not considered a British citizen by the Home Office. This revelation left him facing uncertainty and prompted him to challenge the Home Office’s decision through legal channels.

The case highlights the complexities and challenges faced by individuals navigating immigration systems, underscoring the need for clarity and fairness in determining residency and citizenship rights. Shardey’s legal action against the Home Office represents a quest for justice and recognition of his longstanding ties to the UK despite the bureaucratic hurdles he now faces.

The Federal Government, operating through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, has officially announced May 24, 2024, as the date for the opening of the student loan application portal. This significant announcement was made by Nasir Ayantogo, the media lead for the NELFund, indicating a pivotal step towards President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing accessible and inclusive education for all Nigerian students.

The initiative stems from the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, signed into law by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023. This legislation aims to facilitate interest-free loans for indigent students pursuing higher education across Nigerian tertiary institutions. The enactment of this law reflects President Tinubu’s dedication to fulfilling campaign promises aimed at liberalizing education funding.

The Act, often referred to as the Students Loan Law, established the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to oversee all aspects of loan requests, grants, disbursement, and recovery processes. It signifies a significant shift in education financing mechanisms, empowering deserving students with financial support to pursue their academic aspirations.

Initially slated for launch in September, the student loan scheme encountered various delays, culminating in an indefinite postponement in early March. However, with the confirmed opening of the application portal on May 24th, aspiring beneficiaries can now access the necessary resources to fund their education.

This development represents a crucial milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance educational opportunities and promote socio-economic development through human capital investment. It underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges of education financing and ensuring that no deserving student is deprived of the opportunity to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.

In a statement, Yakubu emphasized the need for a fair electoral process, highlighting the potential consequences of denying opposition parties access to campaign spaces, which often leads to breaches of peace.

Yakubu’s warning comes amidst preparations for the upcoming elections, with the Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, and the Ondo State election set to take place on November 16, 2024. As part of the electoral process, the Continuous Voter Registration exercise will run concurrently in both states from May 27 to June 5, providing eligible voters with the opportunity to register or update their registration details.

Ogunyemi emphasized that such actions are illegal and punishable under the law.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ogunyemi reiterated that it is against the law to obstruct public roads for the purpose of organizing parties or social events. He clarified that even if residents claim to have obtained permits from local or state governments, it does not justify blocking public roads.

Highlighting the importance of curbing this lawless behavior, Ogunyemi stressed the need for continuous public enlightenment. He emphasized that while TRACE officers focus more on sensitization efforts than enforcement, it is crucial to address the issue of road blockages to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during social gatherings.

Referring to the relevant sections of the law that established TRACE, Ogunyemi reiterated the agency’s commitment to upholding traffic regulations and maintaining order on the roads. He emphasized that the primary goal of TRACE is not revenue generation but rather ensuring compliance with traffic laws for the safety and well-being of all road users.

Additionally, Ogunyemi highlighted that individuals caught engaging in such illegal activities may face consequences beyond traffic penalties. He mentioned the possibility of referring offenders to other agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, for psychiatric evaluation, underscoring the seriousness with which TRACE views road obstruction for social events.

In a significant development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has refused the bail application of Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of a cryptocurrency firm. This decision comes as Gambaryan faces charges of money laundering and terrorism financing alongside his company, Binance Holdings Limited, and another top executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who is currently evading authorities.

Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, delivered the ruling, stating that after careful consideration of the bail application, he concluded that granting bail to Gambaryan could result in him absconding. The judge’s decision reflects concerns about the flight risk posed by the defendant if released on bail.

The charges against Gambaryan and his associates stem from allegations made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC accuses them of involvement in money laundering and financing activities linked to terrorism, marking a serious legal battle for the cryptocurrency firm and its executives.

This development adds to the ongoing legal troubles faced by Binance, as regulatory scrutiny around the world intensifies regarding cryptocurrency exchanges and their compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations.

The denial of bail underscores the gravity of the accusations against Gambaryan and highlights the determination of law enforcement agencies to pursue justice in cases involving financial crimes and terrorism financing.
