Cristiano Ronaldo is set to grace the 2024 European Championship as he aims for his third international title with Portugal. At 39 years old, Ronaldo, alongside his long-time friend Pepe (41 years old), has been named in Portugal’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024, scheduled to take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024.

This marks Ronaldo’s 11th major international tournament, adding another chapter to his illustrious football career as it gradually winds down. The tournament presents an opportunity for the Al Nassr forward to extend his record international appearances beyond 206 games and to increase his record international goals beyond 128 strikes.

Coach Roberto Martinez explained that Cristiano Ronaldo was included in the squad due to his quality in front of goal, which he and his coaching staff “appreciate and which we need.”

Despite boasting one of the highest numbers of appearances in the European Championship, Ronaldo has only played in two finals. He featured in the Euro 2004 final hosted by Portugal, where his side lost to Greece, before finally lifting the trophy when Portugal triumphed in the 2016 edition of the tournament.

Below is Portugal’s Euro 2024 Squad:

**Goalkeepers:** Diogo Costa (Porto), Jose Sa (Wolves), Rui Patricio (AS Roma)

**Defenders:** Antonio Silva (Benfica), Danilo Pereira (Paris St Germain), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Goncalo Inacio (Sporting), Joao Cancelo (Barcelona), Nelson Semedo (Wolves), Nuno Mendes (PSG), Pepe (Porto), Ruben Dias (Manchester City)

“Point of Sale (PoS) Operator Voices Concerns Over Unrealistic CAC Registration Deadline”

< 1 mn read

“Mobile money and bank agent, Fasasi Atanda, has raised concerns over the feasibility of the deadline set by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for registering point of sale (PoS) terminals. Speaking in an interview in Lagos on Tuesday, Mr. Atanda highlighted the challenges faced by business owners attempting to register due to the slow performance of the CAC portal, which often experiences heavy traffic, causing delays of up to three to four days just to access the portal.

Atanda emphasized the importance of ensuring that business owners are fully committed to the registration process, considering the requirements and subsequent developments that follow. He also mentioned that some PoS operators are considering legal action against the CAC regarding the mandatory registration requirements.

On May 6, the CAC, in collaboration with financial technology (fintech) companies, agreed on a two-month timeline to register agents, merchants, and individuals with the commission. The deadline for registration is set for July 7, backed by section 863 (1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the 2013 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) guidelines on agent banking.”

President Bola Tinubu welcomed Aminu Alhassan Dantata, Chairman of the Dantata Group of Companies, to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday. Naija News reported that the Nigerian leader received the prominent businessman and elder statesman during a courtesy visit at the State House.

Dantata, who celebrated his 93rd birthday on May 19, is the patriarch of the Alhassan Dantata family in Kano State. As of the time of filing this report, the details of the meeting remain unknown.

See photos from the visit.

Isa Yuguda, a former governor of Bauchi State, has asserted that President Bola Tinubu should not bear the blame for Nigeria’s current hardships and high inflation. Yuguda argued that Tinubu’s implementation of drastic measures and reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the naira, prevented the country from facing even greater challenges.

Speaking at the first edition of the Asiwaju Scorecard Series organized by the All Progressives Congress Professionals Forum, Yuguda emphasized that the economy was already in dire straits before Tinubu assumed office. He highlighted that Tinubu inherited numerous burdens, including the subsidy scam, widespread corruption in the civil service, and the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 lockdown, during which the country allegedly spent billions of naira to subsidize domestic fuel consumption despite low demand.

“U.S. Rejects G20 Proposal for Global Tax on Assets of Billionaires such as Dangote, Adenuga, Otedola, and Others”

“The United States has declined a proposal for a global tax on the assets of wealthy individuals and businessmen, including Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, Femi Otedola, Chairman of the Femi Otedola Foundation, and Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom telecommunication company in Nigeria, among others. Janet Yellen, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced this on Monday, affirming that the Biden administration supports ‘progressive taxation,’ where the affluent contribute a larger proportion of their income compared to those with lesser means.

Yellen stated, ‘We’re not supportive of a process to try to achieve that. That’s something we can’t sign on to,’ in reference to the notion of a global tax on billionaires with proceeds redistributed. Despite receiving support from leaders of some major economies like France and Brazil, the G20’s proposal faces limited prospects without U.S. backing.

While the U.S. backs a worldwide minimum tax on multinational corporations, it opposes taxing wealth rather than income, which could curb strategies allowing billionaires to increase their wealth with minimal taxable income.

At a G20 finance ministers meeting in February, Gabriel Zucman of the EU Tax Observatory highlighted evidence suggesting that the current global taxation of billionaires is regressive, with effective tax rates lower than those of average taxpayers. Zucman advocated for a common minimum standard through international coordination to address this issue, aiming to prevent the ultrawealthy from relocating to low-tax jurisdictions.

Last April, Dangote, Adenuga, Rabiu, and Otedola were listed among the world’s wealthiest billionaires by Forbes, alongside figures like Bernard Arnault, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. Dangote ranked 144th globally, followed by Adenuga at 409th, Rabiu at 581st, and Otedola at 2,152nd.”

DNA CONTROVERSY: SHOULD PATERNITY FRAUD BE CONSIDERED A SERIOUS CRIME?

0
2 mn read

The issue of paternity fraud in Nigeria remains a hot topic on social media, as it has devastating consequences for men who are often advised to suppress their pain and emotions, leading to unresolved trauma. In contrast, society tends to focus on supporting women through heartbreak and emotional distress.

### What Is Paternity Fraud?

Paternity fraud occurs when a woman falsely claims that a man is the biological father of her child, leading him to believe he fathered the child. This deception can stem from various motivations, including financial gain, social status, fear, shame, and stigma.

Paternity fraud not only shatters trust in relationships or marriages but also profoundly affects the lives of innocent children, especially adults.

According to statistics, three out of ten men in Nigeria are victims of paternity fraud, making the country second only to Jamaica in paternity fraud cases.

### A Case of Paternity Fraud

In 2019, Nigerian media personality Nedu Chinedu Ani, known as Nedu, discovered through a DNA test that the child he had nurtured for years was not his biological offspring. Amid the ensuing controversy, Nedu’s ex-wife, Uzoamaka Ohiri, claimed she did not intentionally deceive him and was unaware that the child was not his. She maintained that she had not cheated on Nedu during their marriage but had been in a relationship before meeting him.

Following several online stories about paternity fraud, some Nigerians have recommended that DNA tests be conducted immediately after childbirth, alongside other necessary tests. On-Air Personality Oladotun Kayode, also known as Do2dtun, supported this notion, suggesting on X that DNA testing should be a standard procedure at birth to prevent trust issues later on.

In an exclusive interview with Naija News, Nigerian lawyer Barrister Ehis Okoebor confirmed that there is no criminal conviction for paternity fraud in Nigeria, despite several high-profile cases. He noted that paternity fraud could only be prosecuted if connected with criminal deceit or breach of trust.

“There is no record of a criminal conviction for paternity fraud in Nigeria,” Ehis said. “However, there have been cases where high-profile men disclosed that they are not the biological fathers of the children they raised. While the act of a woman having multiple sexual partners is regarded as adultery and cheating, it is not considered a criminal offense under matrimonial laws. What she did is morally wrong but not legally wrong. For example, in Nedu’s case, no one was convicted, and he did not pursue legal damages.”

Ehis suggested that paternity fraud should be addressed under laws relating to criminal deceit or breach of trust, allowing affected men to seek redress in criminal or civil courts for emotional or financial suffering.

### Addressing Paternity Fraud

Given that Nigerian legal frameworks do not specifically address paternity fraud, it is challenging for victims to seek justice. To curb this issue, the following approaches are recommended:

1. **Public Awareness**: Educational campaigns and public discussions are needed to highlight the emotional and social consequences of paternity fraud.
2. **Legal Reforms**: The Nigerian legislature should consider enacting laws to address paternity fraud and provide guidelines for victims to seek redress.
3. **Access to DNA Testing**: Promoting access to affordable and accurate DNA testing facilities can help individuals confirm paternity more easily. The average cost of a DNA test in Nigeria ranges from N210,000 to N1,400,000.
4. **Support for Children**: Adequate psychological support systems should be in place to assist children affected by paternity fraud.

By implementing these measures, Nigeria can better address the issue of paternity fraud and provide support for its victims.

“Government Considering Database for Private Security Guards to Weed Out Rapists and Burglars”

“Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo advocates for the establishment of a database for private security guards, emphasizing its potential to bolster national security. Speaking at a gathering with private guards in Abuja, the minister underscored the crucial role played by private security personnel in various countries’ security frameworks and stressed the importance of Nigeria aligning with global standards in this regard.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the untapped potential of the private security industry and its impact on national security, attributing past inefficiencies to a lack of standardization and adherence to global best practices. He proposed the creation of a database to enhance productivity, efficiency, and adherence to policies within the industry.

The minister emphasized that establishing such a database would not only create more job opportunities but also improve security, both in formal and informal sectors. By ensuring proper tracking and accountability, the database aims to address concerns regarding the misconduct of some guards, thereby alleviating fears among Nigerians about the safety of their families and properties.

Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo outlined the benefits of the proposed database, including enabling background checks on guards, fostering trust between guards and the public, and ensuring swift justice in case of misconduct. He stressed the importance of instilling confidence in Nigerians regarding the individuals hired to safeguard their homes and communities.”

NNAMDI KANU’S NEW BAIL REQUEST DENIED ON MONDAY

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a fresh application filed by the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to be released on bail pending the determination of the charges brought against him by the federal government.

In a ruling delivered by Justice Binta Nyako, the court stated it was not obligated to exercise any discretion in favor of the defendant.

Justice Nyako highlighted that Kanu’s previous escape from the country led to the sureties who had guaranteed his bail to disassociate themselves from the case. The sureties, in their applications, claimed they were unaware of Kanu’s whereabouts, prompting the court to forfeit the N100 million bail bonds.

Kanu was initially arrested in Lagos on October 14, 2015, and was granted bail on health grounds after spending 18 months in detention. However, during the trial, the IPOB leader escaped from the country. He was later re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021, and has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since then.

The court also refused Kanu’s request to be either transferred to prison custody or placed under house arrest. However, it ordered the DSS to always grant him access to his lawyers and doctors of his choice.

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the explosion at Larabar Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Earlier reports indicated that a 38-year-old man, Shafi’u Abubakar, had detonated a petrol bomb at a mosque in Laraba Abasawa, resulting in the deaths of at least fifteen people.

Sharing his thoughts on the incident via his X account, Atiku insisted that the perpetrator must be punished for committing such a heinous crime.

Posting on X, Atiku wrote: “I am deeply saddened by the horrendous arson involving 23 people who were burnt alive while praying in a mosque at Larabar Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

“This horrific killing of trapped worshippers, and indeed of any other innocent citizens, has no place in our society. I share my condolences with families who lost loved ones to this criminal act. While wishing the surviving victims a quick recovery, it is hoped that available medical resources will be deployed in their care. May Allah accept the souls of the victims, forgive their sins, and grant them eternity according to their beliefs.

“I urge the Kano State government and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrator of this heinous crime is brought to book.” -AA

PORT HARCOURT REFINERY TO START OPERATIONS IN JULY

The Port-Harcourt refinery is set to commence operations by the end of July.

This was revealed by Chief Ukadike Chinedu, National Public Relations Officer of the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria, on Monday.

He stated that this development would stimulate economic activities, reduce the price of petroleum products, and ensure an adequate supply.

Last December, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, announced the mechanical completion and flare start-up of the largest crude refinery in Port Harcourt.

The refinery, with a capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, comprises two units: the old plant, which can refine 60,000 barrels per day, and the new plant, which has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day.

The refinery was shut down in March 2019 for the first phase of repair works after the government secured the services of Italy’s Maire Tecnimont as a technical adviser to review the refinery complex, with oil major Eni also appointed as a technical adviser.

On March 15, 2024, it was reported that the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, stated that the Port Harcourt refinery would commence operations in about two weeks.

Kyari disclosed this during a press briefing after appearing before the Senate Ad hoc committee investigating the various turnaround maintenance projects of the country’s refineries.

He said, “We completed the mechanical phase of the refinery in December. We now have crude oil already stocked in the refinery. We are conducting regulatory compliance tests that must occur before starting operations, and I assure you that this Port Harcourt refinery will start in two weeks.”

“Golden Eaglets Aim for Maximum Points Against Togo in WAFU U-17 Tournament, Says Coach Garba”

Golden Eaglets head coach Manu Garba says his side will go all out for a win against Togo in their last group game on Wednesday.

The defending champions need just a point from the game to ensure qualification into the semi-final.

The Eaglets have garnered four points from their opening two games at the WAFU B U-17 Championship.

Garba said the Golden Eaglets are firmly focused on claiming maximum points from the game and not thinking about a stalemate.

“We are not here to draw matches. I am not happy that we drew our first match against Burkina Faso. We should have scored a number of goals, especially towards the end but we cannot be crying over spilt milk,” Garba told thenff.com.

“We got the three points against Niger Republic, and we have to keep the winning mentality. We cannot afford to gamble; a win is what we are going for. Even though they lost their first two matches, we cannot afford to underrate the Togolese. They got two goals against Niger Republic, even though they eventually lost, so they are not a team to be taken for granted.”

BBNAIJA’S DOYIN SAYS BEING A FULL-TIME HOUSEWIFE IS RISKY

Big Brother Naija star Doyin David has expressed her views on traditional housewifery, emphasizing the importance of financial independence for women. Speaking on a recent episode of her podcast, *Doyin’s Corner*, she highlighted the risks of being fully dependent on one’s husband without any personal savings.

Doyin stated, “One of the riskiest things you can do is to get married and want to be a full housewife and just completely depend on your husband without having any money saved. I don’t support that anybody should become a full housewife. I don’t. I think it’s too risky.”

She added, “I understand that taking care of the house is a lot of work, but I don’t think that should be anyone’s only job. I will never be a full-time housewife, even if I’m married to the wealthiest man alive.”

Emphasizing the importance of having one’s own source of income, she said, “I think both people need to have money of their own before getting married, both the man and the woman.”

In the same episode, Doyin also discussed relationships, asserting that a man who does not want to be “snatched” by another woman won’t be. She stressed, “I believe that a man that can be snatched did not want to stay in the first place. It doesn’t matter how good of a cook you are or anything. If a man wants to leave, it’s not because of anything another woman did to snatch him. If he’s going to leave, he’d leave for another woman anyway.”

AN AUDIENCE PREFERENCE FOR THE AMVCAs [COMMENTARY]

In the world of cinema, award shows frequently ignite passionate debates and discussions among fans and critics.

One film that has recently stirred up controversy for its arguably unmerited dominance at the just concluded AMVCA is Amazon Prime’s “Breathe of Life.” While many, including myself, agree that it is a remarkable movie, divergent opinions have surfaced regarding the distribution of awards, particularly in the supporting actor category.

A supporting actor or actress performs a role below that of the leading actor(s) but above that of a bit part. In “Breathe of Life,” Chimezie Imo, who played the role of Elijah, clearly fits the supporting actor role, unlike Ademola Adedoyin, who played a minor part in the movie.

Chimezie Imo’s nuanced portrayal added depth and emotion to the storyline. “Brilliant” doesn’t begin to describe his performance. However, the unexpected turn of events came during the award ceremony when Demola Adedoyin, who should not have been considered a nominee for the supporting actor category, clinched the prestigious award.

If someone from “Breathe of Life” had to win the award, why was it not Imo, the actual supporting actor? Why was Chimezie Imo given the Trailblazer Award instead? Was it to make room for Ademola, who won at the expense of far more worthy nominees like Itele D Icon from “Jagun Jagun,” Alex Ekubo from “Afamefuna,” and Levi Chikere from “Blood Vessel”?

It was also unexpected to see “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” a movie that had not been released when the award ceremony took place, win the award for Best Writing, ahead of more deserving movies that had already been released in cinemas or on streaming platforms. If it is truly a viewers’ choice award, how does a movie that viewers have yet to see win an award?

The 10th edition of the AMVCA has left the “viewers” with too many questions, and we deserve some answers and clarity.
