“Monarch Accuses Family of Land Grabbing in Demolition of Visually Impaired Man’s House”

0
3 mn read

The embattled traditional ruler of Ihekwuenu autonomous community in Aku, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Christopher Okwor, has dismissed claims by the Ezemagu family that he demolished a blind man’s building.

DAILY POST reports that the Ezemagu family recently accused the police of conducting a biased investigation on the matter.

However, Igwe Okwor has come out to say the renewed campaign against him was orchestrated by Nnamdi Ezemagu as a ploy to wrestle a disputed piece of land from him, adding that Ezemagu frequently stirred public sentiment whenever the case which was pending in court was not in his favour.

He also said that the Ezemagu family had in the past vowed to dethrone him and they were throwing in everything within their reach to achieve their nefarious objective just because Chief Emmanuel Ezemagu, their father, lost the Igweship contest to him.

“The recent media reports about the demolition of the blind man’s house are a rehash of an incident from 2021, aimed at garnering public sympathy. I am saying for the umpteenth time that I did not demolish the blind man’s house,” he said.

Okwor recounted that when the initial incident occurred in 2021, the then-chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Nkechi Ugwu-Oju, provided N4 million for the construction of a new building for the blind man in an uncontested land.

“However, the Ezemagu family refused to use the funds.

“If they genuinely cared for the blind man, why insist on building on disputed land? This is not philanthropy but a strategy to claim the land. The blind man originally had a house that was demolished by the Ezemagu family, who then relocated him to the contested land,” Okwor continued.

“The motive behind all these is that they want to dethrone me as Igwe. They said they will never accept the fact that I defeated their father in the contest for Igweship and as such, they are doing everything to see that I am removed.

“That is even why this land issue started in the first place and that is why they are not relenting. But they have failed. They are setting me up by going to demolish the same house they are building for the blind man so that when they run to the media, people will be blaming me. It is not difficult to see through their scheming. But they cannot defeat the truth,” he claimed.

Igwe’s son, Chris Okwor, also recounted how the issue began: “In 2021, a long-standing land dispute led to threats against my father from Nnamdi Ezemagu. After Emmanuel Ezemagu, his uncle lost the Igweship to my father, tensions escalated. Ezemagu began construction near my father’s building site, leading to physical altercations and police intervention.

“Nnamdi Ezemagu falsely claimed that he had given land to my father and demanded that my father’s building be divided. Despite police orders to cease construction, Ezemagu continued building at night.

“Suddenly, we heard that the building has been pulled down and politicians who are unhappy with my father’s integrity used the situation to suspend him from his position, claiming turmoil in the community.”

He said that the Ezemagu family rejected the financial aid provided by the former Local Government Chairman due to political motivations and promises of a House of Assembly slot.

“Their actions were never about the blind man’s welfare but about securing the land and looking for situations to cause unrest in the community,” he alleged.

Chris noted that one of the blind man’s cousins, Mrs. Amuka, had evacuated him, expressing dissatisfaction with how the Ezemagu family exploited him for their personal gain.

The ongoing attempts to raise public sentiment, according to Chris, “are because the government is considering reinstating Igwe Okwor.

“I still recall that after Igwe’s suspension, the state government set up a committee to look into the matter, but unfortunately before the government could come up with their findings, the Ezemagu family brought police from Abuja and arrested him. They also went further to vandalise his house.”

He alleged that Nnamdi Ezemagu habitually attacks and blackmails anyone who stands for the truth, highlighting instances of media attacks orchestrated by Nnamdi Ezemagu against those perceived to be telling the truth.

He said, “Dr. Malachy Ugwu was attacked for leading a delegation to notify former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi about the N4 million aid by the former Chairperson of Igbo-Etiti LGA, Mrs. Nkechi Ugwu-Oju.

“Also Chinedu Okike, former DPO Ogbede, was attacked in the media for reporting the land dispute and its legal status to the Police authorities.

“They also criticised the FCID Annex Enugu for investigating and charging Ezemagu and associates with various criminal offenses. The FCID Abuja was accused of bias for rejecting Ezemagu’s request to withdraw court cases and commence new investigations, including indefinite detention of Igwe’s son.

“They also went after Mr Emma Ochiagha- for advising all parties to steer clear of the disputed land, allowing the Umuezike community to intervene.”

Chris questioned why Nnamdi Ezemagu allegedly refused to allow the police and independent arbitrators to perform their duties impartially.

“Culture Ministry Allocates N3.7 Billion for Research Amidst Concerns Over Governance Costs”

The Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy in Nigeria has set aside a significant sum of N3.7 billion for “research and development” activities. This allocation is part of the larger 2024 national budget totaling N28.7 trillion, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu earlier in the year. The budget increase, from an initial proposal of N27.5 trillion, sparked public debate, with allegations of padding by Senator Abdul Ningi.

The creation of the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy by President Tinubu represents a focused effort to elevate these sectors’ importance within the government’s agenda. Additionally, specific allocations within the budget highlight targeted investments in infrastructure and promotional activities. For instance, N160 million is earmarked for constructing a skill acquisition center for art and craft in Musawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, while N290 million is allocated for solar street light construction in the same area, which happens to be the Minister’s home region.

Furthermore, the budget includes allocations for international engagements, such as N98 million for a “Nigerian pavilion” at the Cannes Film Festival in France and N150 million for the ministry’s information desk at the Abuja International Airport. These initiatives underscore efforts to promote Nigerian arts and culture on the global stage.

However, scrutiny has arisen regarding the overall efficiency and cost of governance under President Tinubu’s administration. Dr. Muktar Alkali of the Centre for Transparency and Accountability expressed disappointment, citing inefficiencies and high governance costs within some government agencies. This sentiment reflects broader concerns about the need for accountability and transparency in public spending, particularly in sectors crucial for national development.

In summary, while the allocation of funds for research and development in arts, culture, and creative economy sectors demonstrates a commitment to fostering innovation and growth, ongoing scrutiny of governance practices is essential to ensure effective utilization of resources for the benefit of Nigerian society.

“Benue Land Dispute Case Raises Concerns as Witness Admits Testimony Based on Lawyer’s Information”

A witness, Abraham Uwua, on Tuesday, admitted to a Benue State High Court in Makurdi that his testimony was based on information he received from his lawyer.

Uwua was testifying in a suit he filed alongside Terlumun Tyav, Terwase Zeku, and Pastor Cyprian Terwase against Peter Adejoh, Engr Mike Jijingi, the Government of Benue State, Commissioner for Land & Solid Minerals, Benue State, and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Benue State.

When the matter came up for continuation of hearing, Uwua, who was led in evidence by his counsel, Doowuese Adike, adopted his witness statement before the court.

During cross-examination by counsel to Adejoh, Samuel Adama, Uwua was asked if all the information contained in his witness statement before the court were based on what he heard from the lawyer appointed by the community to negotiate compensation with the Benue State Government on their behalf over their land.

He answered in the affirmative.

Another witness, Zaki Gabriel Yagba, who claimed in his statement that Adejoh and officials of the Benue State Government brought police to chase them away from the disputed land, contradicted himself during cross-examination.

He told the court that he never saw Adejoh or officials of the Benue State Government with police or security personnel on their community land.

Yagba, who stated in his witness statement that he was one of those who signed the Power of Attorney given to Barrister Mbafan Ekpendu to represent the community in the negotiations, could not identify his signature when the document was shown to him.

The plaintiffs thereafter closed their case after the testimony of the two witnesses, which brought the total number of witnesses called by the plaintiffs to four.

The presiding judge, Justice Tertsea Kume, adjourned the matter until July 11, 2024, for the defendants to open their defense.

In the suit number MHC/179/23, the plaintiffs alleged that the Benue State Government wants to compulsorily acquire their ancestral land and sell it to a developer without payment of any form of compensation, among others.

They are seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their agents, or anyone acting by or through them from compulsorily taking over the communal land situated at Tse Agbuu, Mbachugh, Utuurn Community, and Ikyouv/Mbachugh, Utuurn Community, all of Bar Council Ward of Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, for any purpose other than overriding public interest, among others.

In his reply to the suit, the first defendant, Peter Adejoh, denied ever engaging anyone to use a bulldozer to destroy or grade the farm land, crops and economic trees of the plaintiffs.

He also averred that he has never at any time personally owned or possessed any land with the plaintiffs’ community or claims any form of interest or exercised any act of ownership in respect of same.

In a swift and decisive operation, troops from the 22 Armoured Brigade, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Patigi, have successfully rescued five individuals who were kidnapped in Olapade/Olayinka village, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The rescued victims, comprising four females and a child, were abducted on May 15 but were freed following a well-coordinated search and rescue mission prompted by actionable intelligence from local residents and vigilantes.

Stephen Nwankwo, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, confirmed the successful rescue operation in a statement released on Thursday. Zamfara State Government Initiates N30,000 Minimum Wage Payment from June

In a significant development for the welfare of its workforce, the Zamfara State Government has officially announced its intention to start paying the N30,000 minimum wage to its employees, commencing in June. Governor Dauda Lawal made this declaration during a meeting with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Gusau, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its workers.

Governor Lawal’s affirmation of the imminent implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage underscores the administration’s dedication to prioritizing workers’ welfare. This proactive step not only aligns with national standards but also reflects a recognition of the importance of equitable compensation in fostering a motivated and productive workforce.

Addressing the NLC leadership, Governor Lawal stated, “Today, I want to announce to the Zamfara State Labour Union leaders that my government will commence payment of the N30,000 minimum wage in June.” This announcement signals a tangible improvement in the earning potential of Zamfara state workers, promising increased financial security and improved standards of living for them and their families.

The decision to implement the N30,000 minimum wage comes in the wake of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law back in April 2019. Despite the nationwide mandate, as of October 2023, several states, including Zamfara, had yet to enact the new minimum wage, leaving workers in these states awaiting the promised adjustments to their salaries.

By taking decisive action to fulfill this obligation, the Zamfara State Government is not only meeting its legal responsibilities but also demonstrating its responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of its workforce. The commencement of N30,000 minimum wage payments in June marks a significant milestone in the state’s journey toward ensuring fair and just compensation for its employees, setting a positive precedent for other states yet to implement the minimum wage.

EFCC Arraigns Former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika and Brother Over Alleged Contract Fraud**

In a significant development in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against Hadi Sirika, the former Minister of Aviation, along with his brother, Ahmad Abubakar Sirika, and Enginos Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Abubakar. The arraignment took place before Justice Suleman Belgore of the FCT High Court in Garki, Abuja.

The charges, outlined in a 10-count amended charge dated May 13 and filed on May 14, 2024, allege that Hadi Sirika abused his office by awarding contracts totaling N19.4 billion to Enginos Nigeria Limited. These contracts are at the center of the alleged fraud, marking a substantial sum of public funds purportedly misappropriated.

During the arraignment, all defendants, including Hadi Sirika, his brother, and Enginos Nigeria Limited, pleaded not guilty to each of the counts leveled against them. This plea sets the stage for what is anticipated to be a protracted legal battle, with both sides preparing to present evidence and arguments in support of their respective positions.

The allegations against Hadi Sirika carry significant weight, given his former position as Minister of Aviation and the magnitude of the alleged financial misconduct. If proven, such actions would not only represent a breach of public trust but also underscore broader concerns about corruption and accountability within Nigeria’s governmental structures.

As the legal proceedings unfold, stakeholders will closely monitor the case’s progress, hoping for a fair and transparent resolution that upholds the principles of justice and the rule of law. The outcome of this trial could have far-reaching implications, not only for the individuals involved but also for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and promote good governance.

Kano State Assembly Dissolves Five Emirate Councils, Grants Governor Sole Power for New Appointments**

In a sweeping decision with profound implications, the Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils within the state. This significant move, announced following deliberations during Thursday’s plenary session, marks a pivotal moment in the governance and traditional structures of Kano.

The dissolution of the emirate councils stems from the passing of the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill, which received unanimous support after undergoing second and third readings earlier in the day. The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, highlighted the restoration of Kano’s “lost glory” as a driving force behind repealing the law that divided the Kano Emirate into five separate entities. This division, he argued, diminished the state’s capacity and dignity on a national level.

Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala, the Majority Leader, emphasized the cultural significance of the emirate councils, portraying them as custodians of tradition whose integrity had been compromised by the creation of additional emirates. With the amendment of the law, all five emirate councils have been abolished, and oversight responsibilities have been entrusted to the Commissioner for Local Governments.

Furthermore, the assembly adopted a motion to establish a new second-class emirate council in the state, indicating a restructuring of traditional leadership arrangements. This move underscores a broader realignment of power dynamics within Kano’s traditional institutions, with implications for governance, cultural heritage, and community relations.

The decision to dissolve the emirate councils and centralize the appointment of new Emirs under the authority of the Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, consolidates executive control over traditional leadership appointments. This consolidation of power represents a significant departure from previous practices and is likely to spark debate and scrutiny both within Kano and beyond.

As the dust settles on this momentous decision, stakeholders will closely monitor its implementation and assess its impact on the socio-political landscape of Kano State.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Calls for General Election on July 4th Amidst Declining Inflation Rates**

In a historic move, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a forthcoming general election scheduled for July 4th. Addressing the nation from the iconic 10 Downing Street, Sunak revealed that he had personally petitioned His Majesty the King for the dissolution of parliament, a request which was duly granted, paving the way for this significant democratic event.

The timing of the announcement coincides with the release of new economic data indicating a sharp decline in the country’s inflation rate to 2.3 percent, marking its lowest level in nearly three years. This achievement holds particular significance for the ruling Conservative Party, as it aligns with one of Sunak’s key pledges made back in January 2023. At that time, amidst a backdrop of double-digit inflation hovering above 11 percent, Sunak vowed to halve inflation, a promise now evidently realized.

In his address, Sunak characterized the latest inflation figures as a “major moment for the economy,” expressing optimism for the nation’s future prosperity. However, he acknowledged the challenges faced by the Conservative Party in recent years, including sluggish economic growth and political instability, manifested by frequent changes in party leadership.

Despite the positive economic indicators, recent polling data from YouGov suggests that the Conservatives trail behind their main political rival, the Labour Party. This sets the stage for a fiercely contested electoral battle as the Conservative Party seeks to extend its 14-year tenure in power amidst a backdrop of shifting political dynamics and economic realities.

VERY DARK MAN FACES A WEEK IN JAIL, FOLLOWING COURT ARRAIGNMENT FOR ALLEGING THAT BOBRISKY PIMPS YOUNG BOYS TO POLICE OFFICERS.

Social media activist Very Dark Man is facing a week in prison following his court arraignment.

According to court footage, the charges against Very Dark Man include allegations that he accused Bobrisky of arranging young boys for senior police officers. This comes about a month after Very Dark Man was jailed for similar accusations, where he claimed senior police officers were gay and that Bobrisky was involved with top lawmakers.

While the specifics of this latest case differ from the previous one, both involve insinuations about the sexual orientation of senior police officers and mention Bobrisky.

Meanwhile, Bobrisky is currently serving a six-month jail term for naira mutilation after a video of him spraying money at a party went viral.

Very Dark Man was a prominent advocate for Bobrisky’s arrest and even filed a petition against him, accusing Bobrisky of engaging in amorous acts with men on social media.

The ongoing feud between Very Dark Man and Bobrisky has been intense. Bobrisky celebrated openly when Very Dark Man was arrested, and Very Dark Man did the same when Bobrisky was detained.

The conflict stems from Very Dark Man’s allegations that Bobrisky was sleeping with top lawmakers, which led to retaliation from Bobrisky.

In response, Bobrisky made his own allegations against Very Dark Man, claiming he had access to the activist’s sex tape and that Very Dark Man was being offered to wealthy men in Lagos.

FG PROHIBITS SMOKING AND MONEY RITUALS IN SKITS AND NOLLYWOOD FILMS

The NFVCB warns that glamorizing smoking in films negatively impacts teens and young adults. Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), announced that the Federal Government has banned the depiction of money rituals and the glamorization of vices in Nigerian films. This announcement was made at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood in Enugu, organized by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

The event gathered movie producers, directors, actors, and leaders from various guilds and associations within the Nigerian film industry. Husseini emphasized the need for bold actions from parents, guardians, and stakeholders to address this industry-wide issue.

Husseini recounted that his predecessor had consulted with the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on the necessity of legislation to limit smoking displays in Nigerian movies, which also led to including restrictions on money rituals. The new regulation covers ritual killings and the glamorization of other crimes to further clean up the film industry.

Husseini announced that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has approved the new regulation under section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004. The regulation bans the portrayal of money rituals, ritual killings, tobacco, nicotine product promotion, and the glamorization of these activities in movies, music videos, and skits. The approved regulation has been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Justice for gazetting.

The sensitization program aims to educate stakeholders about the dangers of smoking in Nigerian movies. Husseini highlighted that glamorizing smoking not only has health implications but also negatively influences the youth, who are the primary audience for Nigerian films.

The board plans to conduct extensive awareness programs in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups, and other institutions. The NFVCB is committed to promoting smoke-free movies and encouraging the creation of content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.

In collaboration with CAPPA, the NFVCB has created subsidiary regulations specifically addressing smoking in films, which was not clearly outlined in existing laws. The NFVCB is prepared to lead this initiative and has begun implementing innovative strategies to fulfill its mandate.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) notes that the NFVCB is responsible for registering all film and video outlets across the country and maintaining a register of these outlets, among other duties.

5 Rules For Friends with Benefits

0
2 mn read

The friends with benefit relationship is one that is often met with caution and even fear.

While some people are comfortable with the idea, others believe it isn’t even possible to maintain such relationships. – I Think it is.

If you find yourself trapped somewhere between the friend-zone and being a couple, here are some rules to follow.

1. No cuddling after s*x

Cuddling has been scientifically proven to induce the hormone oxytocin. This hormone is also known as the ‘love’ hormone or the ‘bonding’ hormone.

It is also secreted by pregnant women to facilitate bonding with the unborn baby. If you do not plan to invest feelings in a relationship, DO NOT cuddle.

2. No extended texting

The human mind is a very complex entity because it is prone to imagination. The more we communicate with people, the more likely we are to assume things that might not necessarily be the case.

For example, we might assume someone likes us more than they do because they will stay up at night and chat to us.

3. No interrogatory questions

Where have you been? Who were you with? You know these questions. In a friends with benefits situation both parties need to stay in their lane and respect each other’s privacy and right to be with other people.

It is after all the difference between friends with benefits and a dating relationship.

4. Limited physical contact

This is similar to the limiting of texting, but it has to do with physical contact. When we are in people’s company excessively, it is easy to develop emotional attachment and even dependency.

This emotional responsibility being the reason we choose to be friends with benefit in the first place ultimately leads to problems when it creeps up.

5. No snooping around (especially online)

No no no, worst thing you can ever do is develop paranoia over someone you aren’t even dating.

It is bad enough when in a relationship, but at least you have some right to be paranoid, at least to a degree.

Respect for the other person’s privacy is paramount. Looking at who they are liking or commenting on online is a recipe for disaster.

LADIES, PAY ATTENTION! IF YOU’RE NOT INTERESTED IN A GUY, YOU SHOULD AVOID THESE 8 BEHAVIORS

0
2 mn read

Ladies are known to naturally love flirting and this might go a long way to cause a strain in guys.

The truth is painful but must be spoken nonetheless. I’ve heard some complaints from some friends plus some of my past experiences.

Ladies, if you don’t have plans for a guy stop the following:

1. Stop calling him “sweet names” like dearie, sweetheart, honey, love etc.

We know you’re a “lovie duvie” but please, control it…don’t give him false hope. Let friends be friends NOT lovers. Unless you want to switch over, then you open up.

2. Stop visiting him on skimpy clothes and buttoned shirts

You visit a guy whose ear NL has filled with topics like ‘How ladies behave when they want to get laid”. If you don’t have plans for him, quit sending those signals. Remember: To every sequence, there is a consequence.

3. Stop getting jealous when you see him with other girls

You don’t want to marry him, yet you get jealous when he’s making headway, relationship-wise. You’re not his mother, biko. Friends sef have limits.

4. Stop discussing your past relationships with him- it’s not his business

This thing you are saying is communicating something different to his mind. You want to talk with someone, you have besties right? False hope everywhere! Now, what do you want him to do? Leave his girl and come solve your relationship problems?

5. Stop visiting him at odd or questionable hours

This is one major way smart and decent girls nicely wipe the thought away from the mind of numerous suitors. If you don’t want intimacy, don’t visit him at all sef. Not like all guys are like that, but MOST girls are like that. A girl visits you and choose to be a good boy, then she hates you.

6. Don’t suggest sleeping in his house or vice versa because something might happen

This offers a protective measure. Don’t get me wrong: if there’s an understanding, it’s okay. More often than not, in a corrupt world of ours, no one can be trusted in a cold bed. You can trust him but can you trust his “down there”. If you don’t want “harassment”, avoid stuff like this.

7. Don’t “miss” him

Ever woke up in the morning and you see a text message in your phone by “just a friend’ saying ‘I miss you’. That stirs up questions as much as it does hormones. It’s risky.

8. Stop ‘breasting’ him

You don’t have plans for him and you’ll be staining his white clean shirt with your b**bs. C’mon! That’s unfair! Some will just come with their coconut and rest on your body as if your skin cells are dead and gone. Let’s change in 2016.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that by 2024, African economies will grow at 4%, making them the second-fastest-growing economic region in the world after Asia. However, this growth is threatened by the continent’s increasing debt.

Data from the World Bank shows that 12% of Africa’s debt burden is owed to China and Chinese lenders. Here are the top 10 African countries indebted to China:

1. **Angola: $20.98 Billion**
Angola’s debt to China primarily comes from loans for post-civil war infrastructure rebuilding. China’s interest in Angola’s oil sector has led to loans being exchanged for oil shipments.

2. **Ethiopia: $6.82 Billion**

6. **Nigeria: $4.29 Billion**

7. **Côte d’Ivoire: $3.9 Billion**
Côte d’Ivoire has benefited from Chinese investment, particularly in rebuilding its economy post-COVID-19.

8. **Cameroon: $3.8 Billion**

9. **Republic of Congo: $3.4 Billion**
Congo has partnered with China for industrial development, using loans to finance projects like National Route 1 and National Route 2.

10. **South Africa: $3.4 Billion**
South Africa has depended on Chinese loans for development projects and the operations of its largest power utility, ESKOM.

Chinese lending to Africa has significantly declined since its peak in 2016 at $28.4 billion. By 2022, loans dropped to $995 million, the lowest since 2004, reflecting a shift from China’s previous extensive infrastructure investments amid the current debt crisis plaguing the continent.

“Volatility is like runoff water; if not directed, it will direct itself. I am happy to see multiple agencies coming together to confront these challenges,” he stated.

Gwadabe also called for technological advancements and cooperation among operators, regulators, the government, and security agencies to better control the foreign exchange market and to establish regulations to reduce volatility.

5 TIPS TO MAKE LABOR EASIER FOR YOU

Labor can be an intense and challenging experience, but there are several ways to prepare your body and mind to make it smoother and more manageable.

1. **Sit on a Birth Ball**
Using a birth ball (exercise ball) can greatly benefit labor preparation by:
– Strengthening core and lower back muscles
– Opening up the pelvis to allow more room for the baby to descend
– Encouraging the baby to move into an optimal birthing position
– Relieving pressure on the lower back and pelvis

**How to use a birth ball:**
– Sit with your feet flat, hip-width apart
– Gently bounce or rock your hips in circular motions
– Use the ball for support while doing pelvic tilts and other prenatal exercises

2. **Do Squats Regularly**
Squats are excellent for pregnant women as they strengthen pelvic floor muscles, crucial during labor and delivery. Strong pelvic muscles can aid in effective pushing and reduce the risk of tearing.

**How to perform squats:**
– Stand with feet shoulder-width apart
– Lower your body as if sitting in a chair, keeping your back straight and knees behind your toes
– Hold the squat for a few seconds, then return to the starting position
– Repeat for 10-15 reps, 2-3 times a week

3. **Practice Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques**
Controlling your breathing and practicing relaxation can significantly impact labor by helping you stay calm, manage pain, and conserve energy.

**Techniques to try:**
– **Deep Breathing:** Inhale deeply through your nose, letting your abdomen expand, then exhale slowly through your mouth.
– **Progressive Muscle Relaxation:** Tense and then relax each muscle group, starting from your toes to your head.
– **Visualization:** Picture a peaceful place or a successful birthing experience to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

4. **Stay Active with Prenatal Yoga**
Prenatal yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation, making it an excellent way to prepare for labor by improving flexibility, strengthening muscles, and enhancing mental focus.

**Benefits of prenatal yoga:**
– Reduces stress and anxiety
– Improves sleep and overall well-being
– Increases endurance needed for labor

**Suggested poses:**
– **Cat-Cow Stretch:** Helps relieve back pain and encourages the baby to move into the optimal position
– **Child’s Pose:** Provides a gentle stretch for the back, hips, and thighs while promoting relaxation
– **Goddess Pose:** Strengthens the legs and opens the hips

5. **Stay Hydrated and Eat a Balanced Diet**
Proper hydration and nutrition are crucial for a healthy pregnancy and can positively affect your labor experience. Staying hydrated keeps muscles and tissues supple, reducing cramps and helping your body function optimally during labor.

**Nutrition tips:**
– **Hydration:** Drink plenty of water throughout the day, aiming for at least 8-10 glasses.
– **Balanced Diet:** Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
– **Snack Smart:** Choose energy-boosting snacks like nuts, yogurt, or fruit to maintain strength and stamina.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can help prepare your body for a smoother and more manageable labor. Remember, every pregnancy and labor is unique, so it’s essential to listen to your body and consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or health regimen.

5 SCIENTIFIC METHODS TO SELECT THE GENDER OF YOUR UNBORN CHILD

What if I told you that you could determine the gender of your child? Thirty years ago, Landrum B. Shettles developed the Shettles method as a natural way to select a child’s sex. Here are his techniques:

1. **Timing of Intercourse**
The method involves timing sexual activity around a woman’s menstrual cycle and using specific sex positions. Shettles’ book “How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby” claims that male (Y) sperm are smaller, faster, and have a shorter lifespan than female (X) sperm. Couples aiming for a male child should have intercourse close to ovulation, when the woman’s egg is released.

2. **Sex Positions**
For those wanting a male child, Shettles suggests having sex in the doggy style position, as this allows sperm to be deposited near the cervix, favoring the Y chromosome. To conceive a girl, he recommends missionary position two to four days before ovulation to ensure that only the hardier X sperm survive in the woman’s reproductive tract.

3. **Timing of Female Orgasm**
According to Shettles, the alkaline secretions produced during female orgasm can benefit Y sperm. Therefore, if aiming for a male child, the woman should orgasm before the man ejaculates. For a female child, the woman should avoid orgasm until after the man has ejaculated.

Shettles claimed an 80% success rate for couples who followed his methods.

4. **Ovulation Scheduling**
Paediatrician Martin Young disagrees with Shettles’ approach. Young suggests having sex several days before ovulation for a male child and near ovulation for a female child. He asserts that his method can increase the success rate to approximately 67% if followed correctly.

5. **Sperm Sorting**
However, many researchers believe these methods are not foolproof. The current gold standard for sex selection is MicroSort, a technique that separates male sperm from female sperm. Sperm sorting is considered the most effective method, especially when combined with in vitro fertilization.

A Nigerian tourist identified as Ilerioluwa Babalobi is attempting to set the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the ‘Fastest time to visit all African countries’ and ‘Fastest time to visit all mainland African countries’.

Babalobi, in an Instagram post, said he aims to visit all 54 African countries “using only public transport and without taking a single plane ride”.

The 31-year-old tourist commenced the trip on April 16. He said the journey would be completed in nine months, adding that he would spend five days in each country.

Babalobi said funds raised from the tour would be donated to the Nigerian Red Cross, a nonprofit organisation that caters to the poor.

He also said the trip aims to promote the Borderless African Campaign advanced by Africa Rising, a non-governmental organisation.

“More important than the record though is the fact that I get an opportunity to fulfill a long held dream of mine,” he said.

“And probably more important than even all that is an opportunity to give back to the society by fundraising for the Nigerian Red Cross throughout the trip.”

Babalobi has been to all 36 states in Nigeria, all 16 regions of Ghana, and over a dozen African countries.

As of the time of this report, he has visited the Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana.

Babalobi is now among the growing list of Nigerians who have attempted to set new world records since the beginning of 2023.

Six mistakes to avoid on a first date

3 mn read

Meeting your love interest for the first time can be exciting and nerve-wracking. First dates often come with a rush of emotions and frequent questions about what to wear, what to say, and how to act.

Despite the uncertainties and anxiety that accompany first dates, it is important to make a good impression and ensure a smooth experience to avoid sabotaging the chance of a meaningful relationship.

Given this, here are mistakes you should steer clear of to ensure a smooth and enjoyable date experience.

  • Being late

Showing up late to a date can create a bad first impression. It can even give off the impression that you do not value or respect your date and his/her time.

To avoid being late, plan your journey and aim to arrive a few minutes early to demonstrate punctuality and consideration.

In case of unexpected delays, communicate with your date. Let him/her know why you will be running late and do not forget to apologise.

  • Dressing inappropriately

You should dress the way you want to be addressed by your date.

Do you know your appearance can speak volumes about your personality, confidence, style, and preferences? So dress and appear in a way that will give a long-lasting positive impression.

Dress appropriately and comfortably without going overboard or overdressing for the event.

  • Constantly checking your phone

Why are you at the date in the first place when you know you will be on your phone throughout?

It is important to put your phone away during a date so you won’t make your date feel unimportant and ignored.

So put away your phone, pay attention, listen, and engage in conversation. Make yourself fully present and interested during conversations.

The only reason you should be on your phone constantly is when you are expecting an important call or message. And your date must have been aware of this beforehand.

  • Talking too much

Yes, you should be active in the conversation but moderation is key. Do not overdo it.

Some people tend to talk more when nervous which is understandable. However, remember that a date is a conversation, and it should be balanced: your date talks, and you talk.

Try not to dominate the conservation. Talking too much about yourself is a major turn-off on a first date.

The essence of a date is for both people to get to know each other so practice active listening.

Ask open-ended questions to encourage your date to share about themselves and aim for a balanced conversation.

Also, avoid bringing up politics or religious subjects. These subjects can be controversial and create tension or disagreement.

  • Talking about your ex

Understandably, you want something serious and you want to do a little preliminary digging.

There is no harm in asking but let it come up organically. Also, do not dwell on it for too long.

Give your date time to open up about his/her past relationship. Do not force it, not even on the first date.

Try not to also bring in your past relationships except when you are asked. This can make your date uncomfortable and give the impression that you are not over your exes.

Rather, keep the conversation light and focused on getting to know each other.

Save more personal topics for later dates when a deeper connection has been established.

  • Trying to get physically intimate too soon

Pushing for physical intimacy too early can create discomfort and send the wrong message.

First dates are meant to establish a connection and understand compatibility, not to rush into physical relations.

So, respect personal boundaries and focus on building emotional and intellectual connections first.

If the relationship works out, there is plenty of time to explore physical intimacy.

But on a first date, do not try to establish physical intimacy to avoid coming off as creepy or desperate.

Remember, be yourself throughout the conversation and let the relationship develop naturally. Don’t force it.
