The Nigerian Army has taken a pioneering role in inspiring and training Nigerians in tree planting and food cultivation, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and food security. This initiative was highlighted during a tree planting ceremony at the Infantry Zoological Garden in Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna, led by Maj-Gen. Henry Wesley, the Chief of Special Service and Programmes.

Wesley emphasized the symbolic and significant nature of the tree planting ceremony, viewing it as an opportunity to project the Army’s commitment to environmental sustainability to the world. He noted that this initiative predates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is unique within Sub-Saharan Africa. The Nigerian Army has established the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches department, which focuses on crop development and animal husbandry, as part of its broader efforts to promote environmental conservation.

Additionally, Maj-Gen. Kelvin Aligbe, Commander of TRADOC, discussed the development of the Infantry Zoological Garden, soon to be renamed the Nigerian Army Conservation Education Centre. This facility was initially set up in 2020 to create a therapeutic environment for families residing in Jaji and to advocate for conservation. The garden also houses specimens of all the mascots of the Nigerian Army, serving as a symbolic “library of mascots.”

The Army’s efforts aim to educate the younger generation on the vital culture of tree planting and conservation, with aspirations to affiliate the center with global conservation and wildlife organizations. This initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to expanding its scope in environmental conservation and raising awareness about the dangers of deforestation to human and food security in Nigeria.

A-review-of-asakes-third-album ‘Lungu Boy’ [Review]

Asake’s third album, Lungu Boy, marks a bold attempt to expand his musical boundaries, but it falls short of the unprecedented trifecta many fans had anticipated. Despite his previous success with a fusion of Amapiano, Fuji, and hip-hop, this album sees Asake venturing into new sonic territories that, for the most part, don’t align with his strengths.

The album, intended to reflect Asake’s global rise, is characterized by mid-tempo tracks infused with Spanish guitars, jazz horns, and dance rhythms. However, the production often fails to complement his unique delivery, leaving some songs feeling lackluster. The absence of long-term collaborators like Olamide Baddo and Magicsticks is noticeable, as the album struggles to capture the same spark that defined his earlier work.

Songs like “MMS” with Wizkid and “Mood” showcase Asake’s attempt at versatility, but they don’t quite measure up to his previous hits. Tracks like “Suru,” featuring Stormzy, and “Skating” highlight a departure from his signature sound, but they lack the energy and creativity that fans have come to expect. Even collaborations with global stars like Travis Scott on “Active” and Central Cee on “Wave” only partially redeem the album.

While Lungu Boy contains moments of brilliance, particularly in tracks like “Uh Yeah” and “Fuji Vibes,” it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity for Asake. The album’s ambition to go international results in a dilution of the raw, streetwise energy that propelled him to fame. Fans hoping for another groundbreaking project may find themselves returning to his earlier albums for comfort.

In summary, Lungu Boy is an album that demonstrates Asake’s willingness to evolve, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. The album is likely to achieve commercial success, but critically, it falls into the “Victory” category with a Pulse rating of 6/10.

Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall star Buju Banton recently shared his thoughts on the rise of Afrobeats during an interview on the Drinking Champs Podcast, sparking a mix of reactions. Banton expressed his view that while Afrobeats is achieving significant international success, it lacks the depth and sociopolitical impact that earlier African music embodied. He pointed to legends like Fela Kuti, Salif Keita, and Youssou N’Dour, whose music not only entertained but also addressed the struggles and political climates of their respective countries.

Banton criticized Afrobeats for not reflecting the current political issues and protests happening across Africa, contrasting this with Reggae music, which he believes captures various aspects of life, including struggles and resistance. He also expressed disappointment that despite Afrobeats drawing inspiration from Reggae and Dancehall, there is insufficient acknowledgment of these Caribbean influences.

Additionally, Banton accused Afrobeats artists of distancing themselves from Jamaican musicians, noting that they often collaborate with artists from other continents rather than featuring their Jamaican counterparts. His remarks have stirred debate on social media, with some defending Afrobeats, arguing that it does include conscious music and that his claims about the lack of collaboration between Nigerian and Jamaican artists are unfounded.

“Ohaji Communities Demand Urgent Repairs for Crumbling Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway”

Residents of Ohaji in Ohaji Egbema LGA, Imo State, have expressed deep frustration over the deteriorating condition of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway. Town Union President Daniel Clifford Ogbuehi and other local leaders have called for immediate intervention from both state and federal governments to address the severe road damage, which they say has worsened over time.

Ogbuehi highlighted the critical role of the road in connecting Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa States, lamenting that despite its importance, it remains in disrepair. He noted that the road, briefly upgraded during President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, has since been neglected.

Residents have reported that the road’s poor condition, particularly in Ohaji, creates significant hardship for commuters, disrupts local businesses, and poses safety risks. The dilapidated sections of the road also attract criminal activity, further endangering road users.

Chijioke Osimiri from Awarra Autonomous Community added that the frequent accidents involving heavy trucks exacerbate the situation, with many such trucks being owned by oil companies that have not contributed to road repairs despite their heavy use.

Local leaders have conducted multiple protests to urge the relevant authorities to address the issue, but their appeals have yet to yield results.
