Land grabbing has become a persistent issue in Oyo State, particularly in Ibadan, where it has taken on a seemingly unmanageable character. This unlawful practice, akin to a stubborn stain, has thrived despite various proposed solutions. Those engaged in land grabbing show a blatant disregard for the law, often resorting to forceful occupation.
Recently, traditional rulers from Ibadan, including Obas and village heads (Baales), have voiced their frustrations over this social vice. They condemned the ongoing activities of land grabbers, who are allegedly using the guise of state government authority to carry out their illegal actions. The kings claimed that these individuals often operate in Oyo State Government vehicles, forcibly evicting villagers from their farmland, family properties, and other assets.
In particular, many communities within the Ona Ara Local Government Area are experiencing heightened tensions, with land grabbers reportedly on the attack. These groups are said to intimidate landowners with the assistance of law enforcement, selling off the seized land to real estate developers. In response, members from 40 affected families recently staged a protest against the land grabbing in the council area.
Legal Framework Against Land Grabbing
In response to the growing number of illegal land acquisitions, the Oyo State government enacted the Real Properties Protection Law, 2016, which prohibits such activities. This law imposes a penalty of up to 15 years in prison or a fine of ₦500,000 (or both) for individuals who use or threaten violence to seize real property unlawfully.
The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Bayo Lawal, previously assured the public that the government would not tolerate land grabbing. He emphasized the need to address this issue promptly, highlighting the law’s purpose and necessity. However, the effectiveness of this law has been undermined by the absence of the task force unit responsible for its enforcement.
Lawal expressed concern over the daily disturbances faced by landowners due to unchecked land grabbing activities, reiterating the urgent need for a robust response to combat this menace and protect the rights of property owners in the state.
