Ovoke’s death an act of God – Family, Brickhall school speaks after burial.

The family of the four-year-old pupil of Brickhall school in Abuja, Miguel Ovoke on Friday described the death of their child as “an act of God.”

This comes amid the investigation into Ovoke’s death by the House of Representatives.

The House of Representatives had constituted a special Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the circumstances leading to Ovoke’s untimely death within four weeks.

Controversy broke out on April 24, 2024, when Ovoke choked on a piece of meat.

He was reportedly rushed to the Excel Specialist Hospital after choking on a piece of meat during lunch at school.

The hospital declared him dead on arrival despite efforts of the medical team to resuscitate him.

But, the mother of Ovoke alleged that her son was killed, a situation that led to protests.

However, the intervention of human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju quelled the situation as the family and school management came to a settlement.

In a joint press conference in Abuja, shortly after Ovoke was buried at the Gudu Cemetery, the family of the deceased and school management described the death as an unfortunate situation.

Speaking in the company of Ovoke’s family and Brickhall school management, Adeyanju said: “Both the family and school management pledged to preserve the memory of the late four-year-old.

“To preserve the memory of our son, Miguel Ovoke, the family will set up an educational foundation that will provide scholarships for indigent students in honour of Miguel. Brickhall School has decided to immortalize Miguel Ovoke by naming the early year’s Resource Room at Brickhall School in memory of Ovoke.

“Brickhall School will support the Miguel Ovoke Foundation by granting scholarships to selected underprivileged children in memory of Ovoke.

“Brickhall School reaffirms their commitment to providing an excellent and child-friendly learning environment for all of their students and the Ovoke family acknowledges the positive steps taken by Brickhall School to address this regrettable incident.”
