Governor Alex Otti of Abia State recently inaugurated a new 100-bed Sustainable Development Multipurpose Hospital in Ubiaja, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area. This hospital, originally named the Mother and Child Hospital, was completed under a Federal Government health intervention program aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the federal government for prioritizing the hospital’s completion and for transitioning its management to the state government.
Otti emphasized the hospital’s significance in Abia’s healthcare agenda, particularly in improving access to quality healthcare services. He noted that the state government would provide additional land for the construction of doctors’ quarters and ensure round-the-clock security and facility management to maintain its operational efficiency.
Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, highlighted the hospital as part of broader national efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure across Nigeria. She underscored its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at addressing multidimensional poverty and improving health outcomes nationwide.
The inauguration ceremony drew praise from various stakeholders, including local government officials and healthcare administrators, who lauded the facility’s potential to significantly impact healthcare delivery in the region, particularly for women and children.
