Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun announced that the state is advancing towards generating its own electricity and plans to extend its distribution to neighboring states once achieved.
Speaking in Ilesa during the inauguration of the Obokun 33KV feeder line construction on August 29, 2024, Adeleke detailed that Osun has developed a draft electricity bill and policy aimed at expanding power generation and distribution.
The governor emphasized that the state is committed to enhancing its energy sector through robust policies and legislation. He highlighted that Osun is rich in rivers and solar resources, which will be utilized to generate electricity. Licenses will be issued to qualified entities for power generation, and the state’s power distributor, Ibadan Disco, will be regulated accordingly.
Adeleke expressed the administration’s goal of making Osun self-sufficient in power supply and exporting surplus electricity to neighboring states. He noted that the previously abandoned feeder line, which had caused significant hardship and economic loss due to prolonged blackouts, will now provide improved electricity supply to communities in Ilesa West, Obokun, Boluwaduro, and Atakumosa West.
Festus Adeyemo, the Osun Commissioner for Energy, revealed that the feeder line project was initially awarded in January 2013 but was abandoned by subsequent administrations. The completion of this project is expected to end the long-standing power issues in the affected areas.
