A former presidential spokesman, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to eliminate ‘superfluous ministries’ during his recent cabinet reshuffle. Okupe, who previously served as the Director-General of Mr. Peter Obi’s presidential campaign organization, expressed his views in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

“President Tinubu has done the needful by his mid-term rejig of his cabinet,” Okupe stated.

He emphasized that “scrapping superfluous ministries is in line with removing waste and making government compact and effective; this is commendable.” According to Okupe, the removal of ministers from the cabinet has been based on performance evaluations rather than arbitrary decisions. He noted that a key performance index report was involved in the assessment, with KPMG also participating in the critical evaluation of the ministers.

Okupe urged Nigerians to expect the President and his new cabinet to take decisive action in addressing the country’s pressing issues. He expressed optimism regarding President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to reposition Nigeria.

“As I have personally stated in the past, President Tinubu has the capacity and leadership qualities to take Nigeria out of the economic quagmire he met on assumption of office in May 2023,” Okupe said.

It is noteworthy that Tinubu recently sacked five ministers and appointed seven new ones, along with restructuring ministerial portfolios to enhance his administration’s ability to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.
