Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has disassociated itself from a woman who posted a video on social media threatening violence against Yoruba and Edo people. The organization stated there is no evidence that the woman is of Igbo origin, emphasizing that her behavior does not reflect the Igbo values of thoughtfulness, discretion, and equanimity.
Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, clarified in a statement from Enugu that the video, which circulated on TikTok under the username @Anyi_anambra, incited violence and was not representative of the Igbo community’s ethos. He described the video as originating from a “deranged psychopath” and assured that such threats should be disregarded.
Ogbonnia highlighted that Igbos, known for their extensive travels and integration into various communities, would never endorse such violence. He noted that harming others indiscriminately could also harm members of their own community, emphasizing the shared cultural ties between the Igbo, Yoruba, and Edo people.
He condemned the video and its creator, calling them purveyors of ethnic discord. Ohanaeze Ndigbo also urged security agencies to investigate and hold the perpetrator accountable. The organization reassured the Yoruba and Edo communities that the threats are baseless and urged the public to ignore them.
