Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Chief of Army Staff Gen. T. Y. Danjuma (retd) have voiced their alarm over the declining quality and standard of leadership in Nigeria. Their comments came during courtesy visits from members of the League of Northern Democrats (LND) in Abeokuta and Lagos.
Obasanjo’s Commitment to Leadership
During the visit, Obasanjo pledged to serve as the patron of the LND and encouraged the group to broaden its operations to encompass the entire nation. He expressed his willingness to support a transition into a “League of Nigerian Democrats” and emphasized the importance of a national focus.
He stated, “I share your concern about the situation in Nigeria, but if you’re a national league, I will join you and even be your patron.” Obasanjo highlighted his confidence in the delegation’s potential to effect positive change, appreciating their efforts to meet with him despite the country’s challenging economic climate.
Danjuma’s Call for Action
General Danjuma echoed Obasanjo’s sentiments, criticizing the current state of political leadership, stating it was “going down and down and down.” He urged those in public office to prioritize the nation’s future over personal interests, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the leadership crisis.
Ibrahim Shekarau, leader of the LND and former governor of Kano State, noted that the group sought Obasanjo’s wisdom and experience in governance. He thanked Obasanjo for his commitment and acknowledged Dr. Umar Ardo’s vision in bringing the group together.
Both leaders’ comments reflect a growing concern among prominent Nigerians about the need for improved leadership standards to secure a better future for the country.
