During recent courtesy visits from members of the League of Northern Democrats (LND) in Abeokuta and Lagos, two prominent statesmen, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General TY Danjuma, voiced their concerns over the declining quality of political leadership in Nigeria.
Obasanjo expressed his commitment to the group, promising to serve as its patron and encouraging the expansion of its operations to encompass all of Nigeria. He stated, “Anytime you people metamorphose into a League of Nigerian Democrats, come back to me and I will be your patron.” He acknowledged the dire situation in the country and expressed confidence in the group’s potential, given the caliber of its members. He also commended Ibrahim Shekarau, the group’s leader and former governor of Kano State, for his dedication and noted Dr. Umar Ardo’s foresight in convening the group.
Conversely, General Danjuma lamented the deteriorating quality of political leadership, stating that the situation is “going down and down and down,” with an emphasis on its worsening state in the northern region. He urged current leaders to prioritize the nation’s future, taking immediate steps to address the issues of poor leadership and governance.
Both leaders underscored the importance of collective action to leave a better legacy for future generations.
