In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Oba Ewuare II of Benin visited Shehu Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi of Borno to express support for the victims of the recent devastating floods that struck Maiduguri. This visit highlights the commitment of traditional leaders to stand by communities in times of crisis.
According to a statement from the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Oba Ewuare offered prayers for the Almighty to protect the survivors and provide comfort to those affected by the disaster.
The floods, which resulted from the overflowing of the Alau Dam due to heavy rainfall on September 10, left over 122,751 residents displaced, with significant destruction of homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Oba Ewuare II conveyed his deepest sympathies to those who lost their homes and means of income, emphasizing the urgent need to address climate change and environmental degradation. He stated, “These are realities that we can no longer afford to ignore,” urging stakeholders, including governments and traditional leaders, to implement effective measures to combat these challenges.
In appreciation, Shehu of Borno thanked Oba Ewuare for his visit and presented him with copies of his books. He also recognized the crucial efforts of rescue teams and humanitarian organizations that have been actively providing aid to the affected communities.
