The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has praised the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) for selecting a female candidate, Patience Key, for the September 21 gubernatorial election in Edo State.
In a statement made during Key’s visit to his palace, the Oba called for breaking barriers that hinder Nigerian women’s participation in politics. He highlighted the importance of recognizing and empowering women, especially in governance, despite the patriarchal nature of society.
Oba Ewuare II commended the PRP for its decision to nominate a woman as its gubernatorial candidate, acknowledging the strength and potential of women in leadership roles. He expressed his belief that women should not be marginalized but should be given due recognition.
In her address, Patience Key praised the Oba for his efforts in combating human trafficking and sought his support and blessings for her campaign. She emphasized her commitment to addressing issues such as poverty and underdevelopment in Edo State and pledged to use her business experience to boost the tourism and agricultural sectors if elected.
