The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has instructed all traditional chiefs and leaders in the Benin Kingdom to perform the “Bisusu” ceremony, a traditional rite aimed at warding off evil and ensuring that the upcoming Edo State governorship election is free of violence and electoral malpractices. This directive was announced by Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin, on Wednesday.

The “Bisusu” ceremony, which involves traditional rituals to prevent calamity, is to be conducted immediately with specific traditional items. Obamwonyi emphasized that the Oba’s directive is intended to safeguard Edo State from any form of evil, particularly before, during, and after the September 21 gubernatorial election.

The traditional rite will involve the participation of all Chiefs, Enigie, Ikao, Edionwere, and Igie Ohen of various deities within the Benin Kingdom. These traditional leaders are expected to use their influence to help ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
