NYESOM WIKE’S POLITICAL VICTORY: A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT IN NIGERIAN POLITICS

< 1 mn read

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has achieved a notable political victory by regaining control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Rivers State from Governor Siminalayi Fubara. With the endorsement of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and certification from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the recent congress, the focus now shifts to the governor’s response as he faces a critical fight for his political survival.

Wike’s political career is marked by his ascent from a local government chairman to a minister, demonstrating his prowess as a “successful” politician. His journey includes roles such as the chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area, governor of Rivers State, and now back to ministerial position under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). Notably, Wike is the sole PDP member in Tinubu’s cabinet, having joined the government independently, despite opposition from key PDP stakeholders.

This situation highlights Wike’s unique position in Nigerian politics, where he has managed to leverage his influence and resources to assert control over a major political party, setting a precedent in the process. His significant financial influence within the party and his strategic maneuvers have prevented his expulsion, showcasing his ability to maintain his political dominance and shape party dynamics from the center.
