The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) kicked off with a dramatic start, featuring legendary clashes, former Super Eagles stars, and surprising performances from underdogs.

SUPER EAGLES LEGENDS IN ACTION

The opening day of the NPFL season saw Super Eagles icons make their mark. Emmanuel Amuneke’s managerial debut for Heartland FC was promising but ended in a 3-1 defeat against Enyimba International. Despite an early lead, Heartland succumbed to a comeback by Enyimba, with new signing Jeptha Clinton scoring twice.

FINIDI GEORGE’S TACTICAL DISPLAY

Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George’s tactical skills were on show as Bendel Insurance hosted Rivers United. The match ended in a goalless draw despite Rivers United playing with 10 men for much of the game.

UNDERDOGS SHINE

Remo Stars delivered one of the biggest surprises with a 2-0 away victory against Abia Warriors, despite the absence of their manager, Daniel Ogunmodede, who is currently with the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

IKORODU CITY’S DIFFICULT DEBUT

Newly promoted Ikorodu City FC faced a tough introduction to the top flight, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Kano Pillars. Rabiu Ali, at 43, stole the spotlight with a brace.

OTHER RESULTS

Sunshine Stars started the season strongly with a 3-0 win over Bayelsa United. Niger Tornadoes also pulled off a surprise with a 2-1 away win against Kwara United. Plateau United narrowly defeated Katsina United 1-0, and Shooting Stars secured a late draw against Nasarawa United.
