Kate Henshaw, a prominent Nollywood actress, has strongly criticized Nigeria’s recent electricity banding system, labeling it as unprecedented and unfair. In a passionate post on X dated July 9, 2024, she expressed her dismay over the practice of categorizing electricity supply into different bands, which dictates both availability and cost.
In her post, Henshaw stated, “Nowhere, absolutely nowhere in the world, is there this purported ‘banding’ of electricity supply. Give everyone access to electricity and let them pay fairly for their consumption. Yet, every 2 to 3 months, there is an increase in tariff!! Daylight robbery in darkness.”
Her comments were prompted by journalist Olive Modi’s critique of Nigeria’s erratic power supply, likening the experience to a toxic relationship where issues continually arise. Modi highlighted the introduction of electricity banding in April 2024, with different bands experiencing varying frequencies of power supply and corresponding tariffs. Band A, for instance, pays more for more frequent supply, while others complain of inadequate service despite high costs.
X users resonated with Henshaw’s viewpoint, expressing frustration with the electricity billing system and echoing her call for transparency and fair treatment in energy provision.
This criticism underscores ongoing public dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s energy sector management, reflecting broader concerns about governance, service delivery, and consumer rights.
