The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has attributed the recent boat mishap, which resulted in the deaths of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and seven others, to ignorance and non-compliance with safety protocols. Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, NIWA’s Managing Director, shared these details during a safety sensitization campaign held in Onitsha.

NIWA reported that the victims failed to register their boat or wear life jackets. Their activities inside the boat distracted the operator, causing a collision with a wooden object that led to the vessel capsizing. The agency stressed the critical importance of following safety guidelines, such as registering boats and wearing life jackets.

The authority warned boat operators and passengers to comply with safety regulations to avoid penalties, including arrest, seizure, and prosecution. NIWA also plans to work with stakeholders and state governments to educate communities along the River Niger about the anticipated 2024 flood.

The sensitization event included a demonstration on the use of life jackets and was attended by boat operators, stakeholders, and community leaders. NIWA reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing safety on Nigeria’s waterways and urged all stakeholders to adhere to established safety protocols.
