The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across most Nigerian states from Thursday through Saturday, with a high risk of urban flooding in major cities.
The forecast indicates that parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, and Adamawa states will experience isolated thunderstorms on Thursday morning, followed by more widespread storms in Borno, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Zamfara, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa later in the day.
In the North Central region, moderate rains are expected in Niger State during the morning, with similar weather conditions later affecting the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue States. The southern region, including Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states, will likely see intermittent rains in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet also forecasts thunderstorms and rains to continue on Friday and Saturday, with the northern and central regions of Nigeria being particularly affected. Strong winds are expected to precede the storms, posing additional risks.
Residents, particularly in flood-prone areas, are advised to take precautions and adhere to safety advisories. NiMet urges the public to stay informed through regular weather updates and advises airline operators to obtain updated forecasts to ensure safety.
