The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning regarding the alarming rise in water levels of River Benue, observed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

This situation poses a high risk of flooding for states along the river, prompting NIHSA to urge state and local governments to implement immediate preventive measures.

In a statement released on Sunday, NIHSA reported:

“The water levels at our critical stations along the Benue Basin as of Thursday, September 19, 2024, have been steadily rising. The levels remain normal for now.

“By Friday, September 20, the water levels continued to rise but are still at flood preparedness levels. We encourage Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters.

“On Saturday, September 21, 2024, measurements showed a steady increase towards flood levels along the river.”

The agency has warned the 12 flood-prone states to take necessary measures to manage the situation effectively. NIHSA appeals to all citizens to help mitigate floods by ensuring their drainage systems are clear.
