Despite heightened insecurity nationwide, more Nigerians are opting for “night travels” due to rising transport fares and other factors. With petrol prices reaching N1,000 per litre at many stations, travelers are seeking the most affordable options, which are typically offered by luxury bus companies operating at night.
For example, a journey from Lagos to the South-East now costs between N35,000 and N40,000 on a mini-bus, while the same route with a luxury bus costs around N23,000. Many travelers, undeterred by safety concerns, prefer night trips for cost-effectiveness.
Chinedu, a traveler at the Mazamaza bus station, explained that the risk is worth taking given the current fare disparities. He noted that N40,000 could cover a round trip to the South-East, whereas a one-way mini-bus fare would be comparable. He emphasized that while no one wants to travel at night, circumstances compel them to do so to meet appointments.
At Alafia bus station, passengers shared that night travel not only offers better prices but also fewer checkpoints and less traffic, making the journey more convenient despite the inherent dangers.
