NIGERIANS’ JOLLOF RICE ORDERS SOAR BY 166% IN 12 MONTHS

According to Glovo, a leading multi-category app, there has been a 166% year-on-year increase in jollof rice deliveries, with a jollof rice dish being delivered every 1.5 minutes over the past year.

Lamide Akinola, General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, revealed these figures in a report released on World Jollof Day, August 22. The surge highlights Nigeria’s growing appetite for the beloved dish, driven by the convenience of ordering through the Glovo app. Lunchtime is the peak period for jollof rice consumption, accounting for 60% of the total orders.

Noteworthy data includes:

  • Highest Volume Day: July 26, 2024, with 57 orders delivered per minute.
  • Top Months: March 2024 had the highest number of deliveries, followed by December 2023 and February 2024.
  • Peak Days: Fridays are the most popular day for jollof rice, making up 15.5% of weekly consumption.

Spending on jollof rice has increased by 65% compared to 2023. Lagos Island leads in consumption with 49%, followed by Ikeja (16%) and Mainland Lagos (15%). Abuja, Ajah, and Lagos Island show the highest growth rates.

Outside Nigeria, countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Poland, and Italy are emerging as significant consumers. Italy, Kenya, and Ivory Coast are experiencing the fastest-growing markets.

Akinola noted that Nigeria continues to dominate global jollof rice consumption, accounting for 86% of the total. The significant growth in orders underscores Glovo’s commitment to offering Nigerians their favorite dishes with unmatched convenience and variety.
