Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has received widespread commendation for his leadership in the fight against terrorism and insurgency across Nigeria. Under his command, the Nigerian Army has maintained consistent pressure on terrorist groups and criminal networks, leading to significant successes and restoring public confidence in the military.
Upon taking office on June 22, 2023, Lagbaja committed to transforming the Nigerian Army into a highly effective force capable of fulfilling its constitutional duties. His efforts have been praised by various stakeholders who acknowledge the military’s continued success in eliminating terrorists, dismantling their strongholds, and recovering illegal weapons.
Significant achievements under Lagbaja’s leadership include the neutralization of notorious terrorists such as Boderi Isyaku and Buharin Yadi. These operations, conducted with minimal casualties, have greatly contributed to the military’s reputation. The sustained offensive against terrorism has also seen the destruction of illegal refineries, the recovery of stolen crude oil, and the rescue of kidnapped victims.
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, praised the military for ending the terror reign of Isyaku in Kaduna State. The operation, which involved troops of the Nigerian Military, resulted in a gun duel that neutralized Isyaku and several of his fighters. Matawalle emphasized the bravery and professionalism of the military and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting security efforts nationwide.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also lauded the military’s ongoing successes and highlighted the improvements in security both within and outside Nigeria. Ribadu emphasized the importance of defense diplomacy and regional collaboration in enhancing national security.
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, provided detailed accounts of recent military operations, including the targeting and destruction of terrorist camps using Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR). These operations have resulted in the elimination of numerous terrorists and the destruction of their logistical infrastructure.
In Delta State, Operation Delta Safe troops discovered and destroyed 43 illegal refining sites and apprehended 32 suspected oil thieves within one week. Buba noted that the troops recovered large quantities of stolen crude oil and other illegal products, further showcasing the military’s determination to combat criminal activities.
The Kaduna State Government confirmed the killing of terrorist kingpin Buharin Yadi by troops of Sector 6 Operation Whirl Punch. This operation was part of a broader effort to eliminate high-profile terrorists and restore security in the region. The government praised the troops’ bravery and reassured them of continued support.
The Nigerian Army’s sustained efforts have been met with appreciation from various quarters, including the public and government officials. As the military continues its offensive against terrorism, citizens are encouraged to support these efforts by providing credible information to security forces.
