Salisu Ahmed, a 66-year-old Nigerian, has become the fourth person globally to achieve remission from HIV following a stem cell transplant. This milestone places him as the oldest individual to reach long-term remission from the virus.
CONTRACTING THE VIRUS
Ahmed, who contracted HIV 31 years ago after his first extramarital affair, has shared the challenges he faced, including severe stigma and discrimination. He recounted being denied access to basic facilities and being asked to leave his teaching position due to his condition. Additionally, Ahmed was abandoned by his family, exacerbating his isolation.
MEDICAL TREATMENT
The life-changing stem cell transplant was carried out at the City of Hope Medical Center in the United States. The procedure involved stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that prevents the virus from replicating. After the transplant, Ahmed successfully discontinued antiretroviral therapy and entered remission.
IMPACT AND HOPE
Ahmed’s recovery is a significant development in HIV treatment, highlighting the potential of advanced medical interventions. His story offers hope to those living with HIV around the world, showcasing the progress in medical science and the potential for curing the virus.
