Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin and businessman Cubana Chiefpriest have engaged in a heated online dispute following Famakin’s review of Chiefpriest’s restaurant in Imo State.
The Review
On September 11, 2024, Famakin visited Chiefpriest’s restaurant and shared his review on Instagram. While praising the restaurant’s ambiance and design, Famakin criticized the pre-made and microwaved pastries. His comments sparked a reaction from Chiefpriest.
Initial Response
In response to Famakin’s review, Chiefpriest thanked him in the comments section, writing, “Thanks for stopping by, Foodie, stay blessed.”
Escalation
However, the situation escalated on September 12, 2024, when Famakin claimed that Chiefpriest threatened him over the review. Famakin posted screenshots of their conversations, alleging that Chiefpriest had made threatening remarks. In one message, Chiefpriest reportedly said, “Karma is real, you must pay for whatsoever you sow in life. I don’t fight low life’s, I leave them to karma. The business you did your wicked review for is owned by a 6 years old.”
Famakin expressed concern for his safety and indicated a desire to leave Imo State, stating, “I know a threat when I see one, I guess it’s time to leave Imo State ASAP. If anything happens to me while I am here, well, you know who to hold.”
Counterclaims
In a twist, Chiefpriest took to his Instagram story to counter Famakin’s allegations. He accused Famakin of requesting his burgers be microwaved and claimed that Famakin had waited for the staff to prepare the food before using it for content. Chiefpriest criticized Famakin for not stopping the microwaving if he was dissatisfied, adding, “You asked them to microwave the burger for you. Stood there and waited for them to do it, then you turned around to sit down and now use it for content.”
Chiefpriest further claimed that his staff provided evidence backing up his version of events.
Famakin’s Rebuttal
Famakin responded by denying Chiefpriest’s accusations, maintaining that the claims made by Chiefpriest were false.
The online clash highlights the ongoing tension between food critics and restaurant owners, as well as the challenges of handling public reviews and feedback.
