The Nigerian Army has addressed the recent closure of Banex Plaza in Abuja, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the incident. The plaza had been shut down for four days following an altercation involving thugs and soldiers over a transaction disagreement.

According to reports, the confrontation escalated when thugs assaulted unarmed soldiers, prompting a swift intervention by both soldiers and policemen stationed for internal security duties. Despite the police’s intervention to resolve the situation, soldiers later stormed the plaza, compelling traders to cease operations immediately.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Army spokesman Major General Onyema Nwachukwu clarified that the temporary closure of the plaza was aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for the violent incident that occurred on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

The Nigerian Army assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the presence of military personnel at the plaza and the subsequent attack. Major General Nwachukwu emphasized the importance of exercising caution and restraint when interacting with military personnel and other security operatives, particularly when they are in uniform.

The statement condemned the unjustifiable assault on unarmed soldiers and underscored the need to prevent such acts of violence against security personnel to maintain law and order. It also urged the public to utilize established channels to report grievances or misconduct by military personnel, emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect for those who serve and protect the nation.
