The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in partnership with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), is set to implement smart technology in the nation’s border towns to enhance cross-border trade and security.

At the recent West Africa Border Security Week, Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, highlighted the evolving nature of border security, noting its significant impact on trans-border trade, migration, and associated challenges like crime.

Adeniyi explained that the NCS, as the lead agency in border management, is incorporating international best practices through ongoing modernization initiatives known as e-customs. This approach blends human and technological interfaces for effective border management.

He elaborated on the benefits of the smart border initiative, which will facilitate the quick passage of passengers and goods, seamless movement for trade promotion, and tech-driven profiling of travelers for economic and security purposes.

Adeniyi emphasized that using smart border technologies in West Africa is crucial for improving regional security, promoting legitimate trade, and combating transnational threats. He noted that successful implementation requires a collaborative effort from governments, international organizations, and stakeholders to address the region’s unique challenges and needs.
