NGO CRITICIZES LAGOS STATE’S INCREASE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARDING FEES AND CALLS FOR SUPPORT TO LESS PRIVILEGED STUDENTS

The Jeremiah and Felicia Aderoju Foundation (JFA) has voiced strong opposition to the Lagos State government’s decision to increase public school boarding fees from N35,000 to N100,000 per term. The NGO argues that the timing of this fee hike is particularly problematic given the current economic hardships faced by many families.

Mr. Jacob Akintola, Director and Coordinator of JFA in Nigeria, expressed concern that the increase would make education unaffordable for many households, potentially leading some students toward criminal activities or becoming societal misfits. He urged well-off individuals to provide financial assistance to help less privileged students continue their education.

At a recent workshop organized by JFA, which included technical training and the donation of 60 notebooks to senior secondary school students in Education District V, Akintola emphasized the need for vocational skills alongside formal education. He highlighted that acquiring technical skills can provide practical job opportunities and reduce dependency on traditional academic paths.

JFA’s workshop aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by teaching students hands-on skills, such as disassembling and reassembling bicycles and computers. Akintola stressed the importance of skill acquisition for future employment and self-sufficiency, asserting that this practical knowledge would be invaluable in today’s job market.

The foundation remains committed to supporting less privileged individuals and enhancing their prospects through both education and practical skills training.
