The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that 49,188 electricity meters were installed in the second quarter of 2024. This marks a significant decrease of 60.86% from the 125,664 meters installed in the first quarter.
In its quarterly report released on Thursday, NERC noted that the majority of the installations, totaling 35,985 meters (73.16%), were carried out under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) framework. Additionally, 264 meters (0.54%) were installed through the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).
The Vendor Financed framework accounted for 12,843 meters (26.11%), while 96 meters (0.20%) were installed under the DisCo Financed framework.
NERC expressed expectations that Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) would effectively use a combination of the five-meter financing frameworks established in the 2021 Meter Asset Provider and National Mass Metering Programme to address the metering gaps and protect consumers from exploitation.
