The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced that ten communities have been displaced due to flooding caused by heavy rains in the Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Mr. Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Sokoto, revealed this information while leading a joint assessment team to the affected areas on Wednesday.
He reported that the flooding left approximately 2,000 people homeless, forcing them to seek refuge in safer locations. The incident, which took place between September 17 and 22, was triggered by substantial rainfall and increased water levels from the River Niger, leading to the submersion of several communities.
The ten affected communities include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, Tukur Cika, Uguwar Gwada, Uguwar Wakili, and Gundu. Most of the displaced individuals are fishermen who have lost significant areas of farmland.
Shehu-Kafindagi noted that all their crops—such as rice, maize, millet, beans, and guinea corn—have been inundated. During the assessment, the team identified an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at Tudun Faila Primary School, which is currently sheltering over 300 individuals.
The assessment was conducted in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Shanga Local Government officials, and security operatives in the state.
