The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced the adoption of the Chamber of Commerce template to enhance economic development within the Niger Delta region. This initiative was highlighted by the NDDC’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, during a sensitization workshop for the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) held on Tuesday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.

Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that this strategy aligns with NDDC’s goal of providing sustainable solutions to the numerous challenges facing businesses in the region. The commission aims to facilitate structured business financing for entrepreneurs, thus promoting a more conducive environment for economic growth.

Ogbuku urged business owners in Bayelsa to leverage the capacity development and financial opportunities available through NDCCITMA. He noted that the chamber was established by the NDDC across the nine states of the Niger Delta to drive entrepreneurship and ensure genuine economic empowerment in the region.

“The chamber will act as a bridge between NDDC and the regional business community, assisting innovators, entrepreneurs, and struggling businesses to achieve their goals,” he stated. Ogbuku highlighted that the chamber would help navigate the stringent conditions set by financial institutions, making it easier for businesses to secure funding.

He further stated that all contractors and potential contractors engaging with NDDC must register with the chamber as a prerequisite for doing business with the commission. This initiative aims to enhance food security, manufacturing, skills development, the blue economy, and job creation for the youth in the region.

NDDC’s Executive Director of Projects, Mr. Victor Antai, reiterated the commission’s commitment to bridging the business gap and reviving micro and nano-level businesses that have dwindled in the region. He encouraged startups and individuals with business ideas to seek valuable counsel from the chamber.

Chairman of NDCCITMA, Amb. Idaere Ogan, acknowledged the long-standing desire of Niger Delta people for a regional body to coordinate business activities. Ogan, represented by Dr. Solomon Edebiri, praised the NDDC leadership for its vision in promoting the Chamber of Commerce, asserting that NDCCITMA would serve as a development partner with the commission.

The President of the Yenagoa Chamber of Commerce (YECCIMA), Chief James Neminebor, also urged NDCCITMA to collaborate with state chambers of commerce and utilize the existing structures in place. The workshop saw participation from local government chairmen from Bayelsa, as well as NDDC leadership and other dignitaries, all committed to advancing the economic prospects of the Niger Delta.
