The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced a notable decrease in Mpox cases over the past four weeks. The number of suspected and confirmed cases fell from 102 to 51, with two confirmed cases reported in Ebonyi and Enugu states. This decrease marks a significant improvement compared to the previous period.
Mpox, a viral disease with symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, is generally mild and most individuals recover within weeks. Since its resurgence in Nigeria in 2017, Mpox has been confirmed in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with a cumulative total of 4,603 suspected cases and 1,125 confirmed cases.
The NCDC emphasizes the importance of continued vigilance to prevent further spread. Key preventive measures include avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms, practicing good hand hygiene, wearing protective gear, and avoiding contact with potentially infected animals.
Healthcare providers are advised to be alert for symptoms and promptly isolate suspected cases to prevent transmission. The NCDC continues to monitor the situation through its National Mpox Technical Working Group, urging Nigerians to adhere to public health guidelines to curb the outbreak.
