The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced that 20.30 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, were imported in 2023. This figure was released in the Petroleum Products Distribution Statistics for 2023 on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to the report, the import figure of 20.30 billion litres represents a 13.77% decrease compared to the 23.54 billion litres recorded in 2022.
Key Highlights:
- Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), also known as diesel, saw an import of 4.94 billion litres in 2023, which indicates a 23.66% increase compared to the 4.00 billion litres recorded in 2022.
- The report highlighted that PMS truck out stood at 20.22 billion litres in 2023, marking a 16.96% decrease from the 24.35 billion litres recorded in 2022.
- Locally, 69.71 million litres of Household Kerosene (HHK) were produced in 2023, a notable increase from 44.68 million litres in 2022, reflecting a growth rate of 56.02%.
- For diesel, the report indicated that 109.39 million litres were produced domestically in 2023, representing a 6.76% increase from 102.47 million litres in 2022.
These statistics underscore the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s petroleum product consumption and production, highlighting shifts in import and local production levels.
