The planned nationwide protest against the economic hardships in Nigeria did not occur in Ondo State today, despite previous commitments from organizers.
Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist leading the initiative, had declared that the protests would proceed peacefully across the country, even in the face of warnings from the Federal Government and the Nigerian Police Force.
However, major streets in Akure, the state capital, remained peaceful, with no visible signs of demonstrations. Normal business and commercial activities continued as usual throughout the city.
The Ondo State Police Command released a statement urging residents to be patriotic and refrain from joining any groups that could disrupt the nation’s Independence Day celebrations. The statement, signed by Police Command spokesperson Funmi Odunlami, noted that the Commissioner of Police had implemented heightened security measures to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Odunlami also advised parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against engaging in activities that could lead to unrest. The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens and confirmed that security forces would be on alert to apprehend anyone violating the law during the celebrations
