Veteran Ghanaian actress Nana Ama McBrown has publicly shared her reasons for never participating in Nollywood films and why she has no plans to do so. In a recent discussion, McBrown expressed her frustration with the Nigerian entertainment industry’s perceived lack of support for Ghanaian creatives.
McBrown highlighted an incident from the ongoing Big Brother Nigeria reality show, where she noted that a song by Ghanaian artist Sarkodie was quickly switched off when the DJ realized it was by a Ghanaian. She used this example to emphasize her belief that there is an intentional lack of support for Ghanaian artists in Nigeria.
“I’m not usually one to watch TV, but my relatives convinced me to subscribe to DSTV. There was a particular program I wanted them to see for Maxy, but I noticed they had switched over to Big Brother,” McBrown explained. “During a weekend party on the show, I heard the DJ play a Sarkodie song. But within less than a minute, the DJ quickly changed the track when they realized it was by a Ghanaian artist. That’s why I’ve never acted in Nigerian movies—they don’t support us.”
Entertainment pundit and artist manager Kwesi Ernest supported McBrown’s viewpoint, reinforcing the notion that Nigerian platforms often prioritize content from local talent over international artists.
